Default Subwoofers where the rear cargo cubby is?

Hello,

Has anyone ever built a subwoofer box that fits on the ledge where the Styrofoam door folds down?

There are many options:
  1. Create a removable, enclosed box that replaces the grey felt insert. It would sit on the same tabs that the foam lid uses.
  2. Create a box that fits inside the grey felt insert. This would let the foam lid close all the way for a stock look.
  3. Remove the grey felt insert and mount the subwoofers to the foam lid and let the entire compartment below serve as the "box"
  4. The same as the above, but with a MDF shelf in place of the lid.

I'm especially interested in the last 2 options. Subwoofers love large boxes and using the entire under-deck area as your enclosure would be a great usage of space. Some sealing would be required. Also, with option 4, the assembly could be removed and stored while taking minimal space.

Thoughts? Unless someone here brings up a reason why it would damage the car, I'm going to try the shelf idea. I found a BBS where the legendary John Wayland was talking about this. Might even try to run a port up to the center console area. I love hacking things.

Thanks

John Wayland built the "Shoebox Sub" and "Super Shoebox Sub", which both live under the felt liner of the cargo box, off to the right side there is a bit of room, enough for a properly sized 8" sub in box. My car has one.

Contact Expertfabricator. He has made sub enclosures for others on here.

Look in new posts, his thread has been revived.

I'm more interested in using the entire trunk area as the "box" as opposed to fabbing one similar to the shoebox. I saw where someone did it with an 8" sub, but it was back in 2004.

I have got an enclosed 8" subwoofer (Alpine SWE-1000) - which fits nicely in the space to the right of the OEM storage box. Best of both worlds.

I'm really looking for the thunderous bass, and particularly the idea of using otherwise wasted space in the whole of the trunk as opposed to the "shoebox" area. When I manage to get my oil changed, this will be my next project.
