I want to say the VW toerag(SP?) uses a tank heater or what ever they call it to preheat the coolant as the engine wont do much in the cold unless its under a load.
Infact I think the newer Ford and other larger diesel trucks have a heater that runs off of diesel to help the vehicle achieve operating temperatures faster.
Another option that was suggested to me was to get an inverter, lifepo4 pack to run it and charge the pack at home, then plug my block heater into the inverter or better yet use a timer.
I could just plug my car in during my lunch or any break before leaving a few hours to preheat the engine.
