Default Driving the Honda Inverter

I was contacted by an interesting enginer a few months ago, that wanted to use the power inverter to drive a 3 phase induction motor for an electric boat application.
He just put up an article about the sucessfull project, that many may find intersting, especially people that may want to use the IMA motor for an EV project.

Enjoy

Thanks for sharing. If anyone has the "speed controller" from the first gen Insight Id love to get one for this project.

Id like to hook this to the IMA motor and try making a poor mans MIMA for the i2.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

The inverter shown is a Civic HCH1 not an Insight G1 though.

Perhaps could have done it by using my tiny HCH1 IMAC&C pcb driving the stock HCH1 MCM.

The solution looks clever and neat and may be useful for other EV type projects.
I'll keep that for reference.

It is a civic IMA, He probably assumed it was an insight after walking around my place and seeing all the insights.
Pretty much the same.
The bottom line is that he has no feedback, and is driving it with a simple square wave. He had it sitting in the back of his car, and ran up the 3 phase motor nicely.
No need to deal with the complexity of the MCM, just need 3 squarewaves with the proper phase, and a way to change the run frequency.
A look at his schematic, and you can see that his clock is just a LM555 timer.

I have to wonder if one of the hobby 3 phase speed controllers used for the 3 phase model motors would drive the inverter?

Yet another project

I think they would and the Insight inverter as well. That has an earler version 250A IGBT and seperate drive electronics but intrinsically the same. Plus the wires into the drive electronics in the G1 are fully documented in the workshop manual.

I'd test it if I had a Honda inverter.

I have one in the mail and a g1 to test it on. you saying this hobby speed controller is a Pnp solution to drive it by producing a square wave?

Even before I got my Insight I always wondered if it were possible to to keep the IMA motor and the internal combustion engine but scrap everything else. Use my own motor controller, maybe even decouple the IMA from the ICE but after learning how the electric motor is in there I doubt that will ever happen.

Cobb,

You can do it!

Remember Peter's 4 IMA motor array? He certainly has a way to make it work, otherwise he would not have invested this much time into the project.

Jim.
