I think the tesla s door handles are just for show and over complicated.
Got a tour of the Tesla factory a month or two ago. Even their engineers agree that it's very complicated, but it was a highly requested feature and IMO it's a nice touch.

Used to be in aerospace as a design engineer. Then moved on to designing small slow cars for Williams F1. I'm now designing a slightly larger, slightly faster car for an attempt on the land speed record.
