Fuel Only - Starter Click-Clack

Hi All,

I was recently "forced" into a fuel only configuration with my '01. Mileage is still pretty good @ 50MPG so I'm not overly motivated to shell out for a replacement controller (Honda dealer claims it was damaged by battery imbalance) and battery fixes.

So I'm cool with the current situation. However, I AM experiencing a clickity-clack noise when I start the car. The noise is reminiscent of a "normal" car's starter relay when the 12V battery is low on juice. With this car I'm not sure if this is to be expected or if the 12V abttery, now being taxed with actual work, needs replacing.

Anyone know what's normal for the starter in fuel only mode?

For reference, as recommended by this website, I've pulled the two wiring harness connectors from the battery controller. 12V charge light comes on occasionally after a high rpm event but goes off soon after.

Your vehicle is starting off the 12V battery because the IMA is disabled.
That is normal. It should sound like a dodge slant 6 starting.
