Default CVT bummer to bummer traffic

I recently got a new job where I have to face the grind of 8 and 5 traffic. Is there a way to make the insight not constantly auto-stop when faced with bummer to bummer spots? It seems like it can't be good for the car to cut on and off every 20 seconds or so..

There are several ways to disable Auto Stop. The easiest one (and you can change when you want) is to just put the climate control on Auto with the A/C on (Econ set to off)...This will keep the car idling because the A/C compressor will remain in use. It will also use more gas

To disable Auto Stop at all times there are two other ways:

1) Disconnect the temp sensor directly behind the front bumper. However, this sensor is also used to determine outside temp on cold mornings to determine if the IMA should start the car or if the typical starter motor will so perhaps a bad idea. Plus, you would not get AutoStop in any other traffic conditions as well.

2) Crimp the vacuum line to the brake sensor. I'm talking about the sensor used by the IMA to determine if the cars needs to be restarted while in Auto Stop due to vacuum loss. Crimping that line only going to the sensor would stop the car from going into AutoStop to begin with. However, messing around in this area is can be dangerous if you don't know what to crimp or where the sensor is. Plus, you would not get AutoStop in any other traffic conditions as well.

I don't think that there is any noticeable longterm damage being caused by AutoStop in bumper to bumper traffic. These engines are designed for over 200,000 miles. In fact, I created a mod to allow for even more Auto Stop in bumper to bumper traffic. It does this all automatically:

I believe an even easier way is to use S mode on the steering wheel. This also disables Auto Stop and will not impact MPG as running the A/C compressor will.

Good idea Scott, I forgot about that one The S mode seems to be the best choice of all for flexibility and fuel consumption.

I will go out and look for this one, is it up high, down low? passenger side, driver or center? thanks!

It is directly behind the bumper in the center where the front license plate would be. It is a small cylinder shape and has a two wire connector. It is the only thing in that area that has wiring. You should be able to see it by looking at the "back" of the front bumper (viewing from the top with the hood open). If you like this method, you can wire up an inline switch so you can enable / disable at will but I like Scott's "S" mode suggestion as well.

Here is a good page that shows the location and shape:

Thanks, I'll try the S trick. I'm only pushed it like 2 times since I had the car.
