Default Scanguage II - Xgauge for Lean Burn Mode

I've never seen this posted on InsightCentral, so I thought I'd share:

GAUGE: Lean Burn
UNITS: N/A
CONF?: Yes
->TXD: 686AF10115
->RXF: 044105150000
->RXD: 2808
->Mth : 000100020000
->NAM: LBN
NOTES: (For lean burn equipped hondas)
If the value for LBN = 0 you are in lean burn.
If the value is higher than zero, you are not in lean burn.

I found this in an Xgauge database on cleanmpg.com.

Hey, can you fix the link? It seems to try to redirect to a truncated URL.

It looks like insightcentral is truncating the hyperlink. Not sure why... I'll list it different ways; you'll figure it out.

Good luck.

Yep, they don't like the c-l-e-a-n-m-p-g part of the hyperlink (they take it out every time I type it in. So, just take out the dashes...

Explanation of the Xgauge at the bottom (I thought it was interesting):

GAUGE: Lean Burn
UNITS: N/A
CONF?: Yes
->TXD: 686AF10115
->RXF: 044105150000
->RXD: 2808
->Mth : 000100020000
->NAM: LBN
NOTES: (For lean burn equipped hondas)
If the value for LBN = 0 you are in lean burn.
If the value is higher than zero, you are not in lean burn.

This is just watching the O2 sensor and dividing the value returned by 2. To get actual voltage coming from the sensor you would need to change Mth to 000100C80000. This will divide the value by 200 (normally you multiply by .005)

Since I posted that explanation on the 'other' site I will add some thing to it. When you divide the sensor value by 200 (C8 in hex) the Xgauge only shows 0 and nothing more.

I believe this is because the scangauge does not show enough digits to the right of the decimal. Perhaps dividing by a smaller number like 20 will show some thing. I may get a chance to test this in the next few days but other wise give it a shot if you can.

I would also like to make the comment that if the car is already warmed up and at cruising speed, I can make it go into lean burn any time I want it to. I set the LOD gauge above the LBN gauge. Once I'm cruising, I feather the throttle until LOD drops into the 50s (or lower, but not too low) and then maintain a steady LOD for 2-8 seconds. The LBN drops to zero and it's fairly easy to maintain after that... no quick throttle movements and not letting the FCD MPG drop below 74. At 40-45 MPH on the flat, I can maintain 105-125MPG.

Of all the gauges (and Xgauges) available on Scangauge II, it seems that LOD most closely correlates with easing into lean burn, at least IMO.

I am a kinda newbe with my Insight (got it last June) and had not heard of the ScanGague ll. Is it worth the money, is it easy to install? Where is the best place to by it? How do you do it and where is the best location for the readout? What other add ons are worth while? Lot of questions huh? The MIMA is out of my price range today, but would appreciate any input other drivers have. Love my Insight!

thanks,
Nick

Like AutoXray, Auterra for the Palm and others, its a scan tool. It lets your read diagnostic codes and the _generic_ data stream of the input sensors.

There's no "magic" in the Scangauge. You have a "lean burn" readout on your dash right now. The MPG gauge. Bascally anytime its reading 70 mpg or higher your in lean burn. Maximize its value by the lightest possible pedal pressure to maintain MPH and your taking the first step towards hypermileing.

HTH!

I use the Scangauge in addition to the built-in gauges. The Scangauge makes it far easier for me to find lean burn. Some folks may not find it useful at all, but I find myself using the information provided by Scangauge constantly. Without it, you will have to feather the throttle and coax your Insight into lean burn; with the Scangauge, I can monitor running engine parameters and make it go into lean burn ANY time I want it to, at just about any speed. But, it's personal preference. Keep in mind, the really good hypermilers you read so much about these days always use scan tools such as a Scangauge...

http://www.scangauge.com

There is a group discount for Scangauge at h-t-t-p colon forwardslash forwardslash w-w-w dot c-l-e-a-n-m-p-g dot c-o-m that you might be able to particpate in (you can see the offer on the left side of the page). You can read much more about the Scangauge on their website...

Enjoy,

Leo
