Is the freway where the Insight really shines in mpg?
I don't know if this is average, below average, or above average highway mpg on my CVT Insight. I'm getting 60-70mpg on the highway. My last 40-mile drive on the freeway yielded a high 74mpg.
Just normal driving, though I will ease up on the gas pedal when it's practical. No real hills, but the freeway wasn't flat. Typical southern California terrain with slight ups and downs. What are other CVT drivers getting on the highway?
I read somewhere that the 1st-gen Insight is supposed to be more of a highway cruiser whereas the Prius is more of a city cruiser, hence their EPA ratings for city/hwy. True?
what sort of speeds do you drive on the highway? Your MPG seems pretty good for a CVT.
The prius gets better MPG in the city because it can run on electric only in the city, or when moving from stops, the insight cant do this in the city, hence giving the prius a better City MPG than HWY. If the prius could not do electric only, then its figures would also be typical with city a little lower than highway.

02insight is right on. It's the getting the mass moving from a stop that consumes the most gas. An object in motion tends to stay in motion so takes less fuel to keep moving on the highway just fighting wind resistance and friction.
Your mileage is good for a CVT, if traffic allows you can let speed bleed on uphills and take advantage of downhills for best mileage. Staying under 60mph if possible helps, ever notice the speed at which rain starts rolling off the windshield? It's somewhere around 50mph and reminds me I need to go rain-x my windshield today.

Those numbers sound very high for the CVT. When I take the highways in my area it's a struggle to keep above about 52 mpg. Flow of traffic is 75 mph or higher. It's not in the range for best mileage. When I'm back in Western NY where you can get away with 60 or so on the highway it's a piece of cake to also get 60 mpg or more.
I seem to get my best mileage on the two-lane county roads. On a 40 or 50 mile round trip I can get up to 68 mpg. That's averaging 50-55 mph and getting some gravity assist on the inclines. Alas, my best tank to date has only been 60 mpg because my commute is nearly all on the interstate and we play Nascar around here.
My speed in getting 74mpg varied in the 60s to sometimes in the mid 70s. Maybe a few times dropped to high 50s on the open stretches. There was about a couple of miles where traffic slowed to stop and go.
I think for the most part speed was in the high 60s. Other than a section of the freeway where traffic got a bit congested, I don't really remember driving under 55mph. California drivers will get irritated :P
On UK motorways the inside lane is where the trucks drive and they are limited to 58 MPH. I stick in that lane and all the fast stuff is two lanes away fighting to get to work a few nanoseconds quicker, so for the most part, you can crawl along using the trucks as a cruise control with no aggro from other drivers.
At about 55-60 my 2001 manual Insight gets an average of 105 MPG (note this is imperial gallons which are 20% bigger) I do 40 miles each way on my commute and have seen a door to door best of 123 MPG with 115 quite a common sight in summer.
A few weeks ago the IMA packed up, (it was the 100 amp battery fuse) and even with zero hybrid functionality and no electric power, the thing was still hitting 95-100 MPG! That little engine, the light weight and the aerodynamics sure are brilliant.
I was in LA for 3 weeks a couple of months back, and saw 4 insights while I was stuck in your mammoth traffic jams.

That is excellent MPG for a CVT on the highway going 65-70 MPH. My CVT does best at 45MPH on back roads.
It is really hard to get below 50 MPG for a CVT on the highway....
Just before the huge Christmas snowfall in the Northeast, I was in Pittsburgh, PA and had to get back to New Hampshire that day, I knew that I would hit heavy snow eventually so I got up early and drive 85 - 90 MPH through PA and NY until I hit snow. Even driving that fast for about 400 miles, I still got 47 MPG....I hated to do it but it is not very pleasant driving through heavy snow with tons of traffic for over 200 more miles after New York state.
I just can't understand how the CVT owner who posted a few months ago was getting something like 25MPG....Something wrong with that car....

Im only getting 62mpg over the last two tanks since changing the tyres to Fulda EcoControls. Feels like driving in honey but I do a fair bit of stop start type stuff as Im whitley and come down the M69 at 80.
