What is this NoX purge, how do I know I've felt it? I have a drive that is after a slight downgrade that goes on a good 15 miles without much change in elevation how can I get my maximum lean burn with out dropping down into the 40s mph or lower?!
It's difficult to explain in text. You're just going to have to become more familiar with your car.
The NOx purge is when you're forced out of lean burn for 10-30 seconds while it purges the NOx from the cat. When this is complete, it will re-enter lean burn mode.

The NoX purge is what happens when you are traveling along at a nice steady speed and you feel the little hiccup and the mpg will drop to around the 50-60 range and the car will usually start to speed up; all this with no change in the pedal position. It is at this point where you'll want to let off the pedal to keep the mpg's up unless you need the increase in speed. It (the purge) usually lasts for 15-20 seconds or so then lean burn returns and the mpg's shoot back up and you will have to reapply pedal (slowly) to maintain the speed you were at before the purge...if you let off when it started. Personally, I drive to keep the FCD as high as possible and not worry about my speed, without going below the minimum posted speed, especially on 4-lane roads.

I'm glad to have read this thread. It easily explains why the MT gets much better MPG's than the CVT. I have a 2001 MT Insight that originated in California. Wasn't sure if mine had the lean burn or not...good to see that it does.
I have yet to feel the lean burn hiccup though...but I will be paying more attention...

That is what I was looking for thank you Diamondlarry. The reason I'm on insight central is to get to know my car! I ask questions of other drivers. Diamondlarry are you driving around 55 mph or do you fluctuate between 55 and below 40 to keep the mpgs around 100? I can't seemed to keep mine any high than 75 at a constant speed, if I get it to over 100 mpgs I start loosing momentum real fast. Also on the calpod switch any other hints when to use it, I was trying more today but just don't think it helps a whole bunch, I seem to be able to glide a little better but then to a hill I really loose speed.
One of the hardest things for people to learn is the foot control. Most people are used to just slamming the pedal around, but you can't do that with the Insight, if you want good MPG.
Learn to move the pedal millimeters at a time - literally. I estimate that each 2-3mm of pedal travel is ~5MPG on the FCD.

Out on the highway, I can't stay in the 100 mpg range. I shoot for the 80-85 mpg range with a low of 70 mpg on the hills-which seems to be about as low as you can go without dropping out of lean burn from using too much pedal. The key phrase above is "shoot for" as traffic or terrain can sometimes mess that up. My target speed is 55 mph and, since 45 mph is usually the minimum speed on the 4-lane highways around here, I try to stay above that. I will sometimes use the purge cycle to pick up speed when not in lean burn as Ive found that I can go from the usual TPS reading of around 24 up to around the 30 range without dropping the mpg's much lower than they drop to for the duration of the purge. I especially try to do this when I see a larger than usual hill is coming up. The bonus with the higher speed then is that I can go a bit farther until I reach the lower end of my speed range.
Definitely listen to Eli's advice about pedal control. With the Insight, the old saying of "drive as though you have a raw egg between your foot and the pedal," is crucial to getting the best mileage. And for staying in lean burn, slow movement is very important; too much too fast can make it drop out. Slow and small is best. Right Lane Cruiser (Sean) is about the best I know of for awesome highway mpg's. He once drove from his home in MN to my house and had just a smidge over 100 mpg for the entire trip, including going through Chicago AND getting caught in a 2 hour traffic jam due to construction around the I-80/I-94 area east of Chicago. My goal is to get to his level sometime.

The hiccup sounds exactly what we experience with the i2. Sure it drops out of the mode after a few, but I assumed that is from either increased rolling resistance or the engine temp dropping, etc. I found my scan guage 2, but its only v 3.6. Wish me luck at programming it to tell if lean burn exists for the i2 without a doubt.

I had to send mine in for the $25 upgrade before I could program the X-Gauge. It was a very quick turnaround and programming it was easy after that.
