Default Another EGR Plate posting...

I've read quite a few of the EGR Plate cleaning threads here, but I think that of the pictures I've seen, well, see for yourself.

Got the new EGR Plate gasket from Majestic Honda (among other parts) yesterday, and it was a rather nice day today, so I set out to get the job done.

As has been mentioned the two bottom nuts are rather hard to reach, but not terribly difficult with the right combination of socket, extension and universal joint.

The actual cleaning job was performed with a pin punch to scrape out the compacted material, and finishing up with a stainless steel wire brush (toothbrush size) and Dawn dishwashing liquid in hot water.

The results are fantastic. No more herky-jerky, no more over-revving on the gear changes, increased mpg overall and generally much smoother.

How bad was the gasket? It is warm here too and I'd like to do mine but I don't have a new gasket.

It is not worth trying to re-use the gasket on something like the intake manifold. A leak here would be disastrous. Worth the peace of mind to replace it, IMO.

+1 to Eli, the gasket between the EGR plate and the cylinder head is a crush type and may not seal completely if reused.

If your area is like northwest Arkansas, you get at least one half-way pleasant day per month even during the winter. Order a gasket and have it on hand towards that day.

Ok, fine.

Happy new year.

I reused the gasket with confidence - I just used copper spray-a-gasket on both sides and let it get nice and tacky before I rebolted everything. But I hear you on the risk of things going catastrophically wrong, especially with our lean-burning motors, so.. yeah, it's better for everybody else to be safe than sorry

I reused mine after a good cleaning, okay basically was just impatient and wanted to fix the darn herky jerky and didn't want to wait for the part. Been running 20K since then with no issues.

I think you gasket re-users are missing the point. Unless you've got a big gaping hole in the gasket, there will be no apparent issues.

The issue with a leak at the intake manifold is dirt intrusion. This would only be detectable with an oil analysis, and would only manifest itself as your engine wearing out prematurely. The secondary issue(or first, if the leak is bad enough) is a cylinder running lean due to the leak. Even the Insight engine would burn valves and melt pistons if it were run lean at high loads.

Sorry.. lol. I don't mean to alarm anyone, but reusing gaskets is a big no-no.. It's just not worth the risks, especially at something like the intake manifold. Applying something like high temp RTV or the copper spray on gasket that RJB used is probably acceptable in a pinch.
