one thing I dont see mentioned is the different A/F sensors between 2000 and 2001. According to the the service manuals, 2000 used the 5 wire, and late 2001, they changed to 4-wire A/F sensor. In 2002 the 3rd sensor was added, so 2001 still has 2 sensors, but both 4 wire.
505 was for 2000, and 506 is for a 2001. Can anyone who has both cars see if you have the same kind of sensors, because I dont see how these ECU swaps between these two years are even working, unless the ECU's are smart and can adapt to different wiring.
From my research about 2000 and 2001 ECU's/replacement using service bulletins and parts sites, here is what I gathered.
according to SB 02-081, original 2000 used A01, replaced because ("The ECM does not correctly identify all malfunctions of the air/fuel ratio sensor")
This ECU is replaced by -345 in MY2000 and -316 in MY2001
Then in SB 07-038, these replacements are now faulty too. (Oversensitive to P0420). Replacement ECU's were -505 in MY2000 and -506 in MY2001
According to the same SB, -355 MY2000, and -326 MY2001 are also proper replacements that fixed the P0420 bug.
summary of ECU order
MY2000, -A01 --> -345 --> -505 or -355
MY2001, -??? --> -316 --> -506 or -326
BTW this is all for the MT 2000/2001 insights, and there are still some gaps and inconsistencies.
My 2001 (built in late 2000) has the five wire AF sensor and only two sensors total, so the ECU plugged right in and worked for me.

its interesting how the service bulletins dont mention early or late 2001 insights and their A/F sensor differences. Instead they have just one ECU for all of 2001. Perhaps these ECU's can detect the wiring and adapt.
Personally, I suspect is a 2002 model year change. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I have never heard of Honda doing a middle year design change.

My 2000 popped the p0420 code while city driving. The cat has 224,000+ miles on it. Also, I have not had the 07-038 recall done yet. Replace the rusted cat? Get the recall done? Just do the cat? Just do the recall?

My 2001 has the 316 ECM and two O2 sensoors, and two cats. I don't seem to get the p0420 codes, and not sure I'd replace the ECM even if I did. Does the replacement ECM damage the fuel economy?
Later. OK, it's complicated but I think I have 02Insight's data sorted. I apparently have the "first" replacement in my 2001 so good to go. Thanks for the research.
It would be nice if we could figure out the production dates for these vehicles. According to my research, the VIN just indicates, in the 10th position, the year of production. That isn't much help with the 2001
Later still! Willie pointed out that the month/year was on the door pillar. Checking my 2001 model, I see it was manufactured on 11/00. I suppose someone could build a spreadsheet with 02Insight's ECM data and see if the 2001 model year was split by the manuf. date. Not me - my plate is full
It's possible. However, the 505 was in for nearly 4 weeks of the commuting on this tank. There is something I noticed this week that I want to look into a bit more. It seems that the car is more sensitive to coming out of lean burn when crossing through the 38 mph threshold (the point at where V-tech kicks in?) in 5th gear. I seem to remember that if I were light enough on the throttle I could pass through that level without losing lean before getting closer to 40 mph. Again, this is only a suspicion as it's rare lately that I get to those blistering speeds.
