I think you gonna really like that one. I have one in my 2001 and it really seems the best of the bunch to me. Great MPG

So is it conclusive that the early ECM's get better fuel mileage? Or is it to do with the life of the IMA battery?

personaly, I beleive its a combination, old ecm, mcm, bcm. I know first hand the old ecm and mcm do not like the new(er) bcm. keeping my car in lean burn, out of assist, and the batt topped off is a nightmare sence I replaced the bcm with the new one. Even when my old pack was dead (yes, it was dead, wouldnt accept any form of charge) i was able to lean burn very easy, I had power (ic engine), and my MIL rarely came on-over night the car declined-

Some of the very early ECM changes cured obvious cold weather over charging problems. Don't know, and no one has stated, the number of the original. The first update, to solve the cold weather problem, was the 316 if done early, and the 505 reflashable if done later.

The 316 in my experience is the best currently available from a MPG viewpoint, but I have only tired a couple. I don't notice that it does the battery any damage.

I mentioned earlier that I have an A02. As far as I know it's never been changed. I have a 2000, something like number 58, though it's a Canadian car, not sure if the VIN sequence numbering is country specific... Also, the ECM is likely different from US versions in at least some ways, as I have to run the UK OBDIIC&C software in order for it to work properly... The ECM software version numbering seems nascent-looking - 1C 00 10 00 00 00...
