Exclamation ????? mpg

HI my names jennifer and my mother's own my deceased fathers 2000 honda insight. My mother has been taking really good care of it, but for the last year there's been some problems. we got the ami battery replaced and the oil changed. but the mpg has gone down so low that it's at 30mpg's. I took it back to the honda dealer and they cant find anything wrong with it. I'm hoping that somebody here might be able to help me out by telling me whats the problem so i can get it fixed for her. She loves this car very much. I do have a feeling that the machanics at the honda dealer really dont know what there doing. PLease help if any?

Check the tire pressures, they may have lowered them to honda specified levels at the dealership as part of what they do when a car comes under their care. Chances are the original owner kept them maintained at much higher pressures to maintain good fuel economy and honda reset them when the ima battery was replaced. Check tire pressures regularly and maybe try 50psi or 60psi for starts if your road conditions justify this an see if the mileage increases. This pressure is higher than Honda authorizes but mileage will accrue.
Welcome & Enjoy your Insight!

Need more information, mainly is it a manual or CVT, miles on the vehicle, and where are you located. Terrain and weather will also have a large effect on your mpg.
Maybe someone close by can help.

Also check to make sure the dealer didn't overfill the oil.

I think that the biggest question is what is a typical drive? 40 miles on the interstate, 2 miles in bumper to bumper traffic, etc. I bought my 2001 just over a year ago with a lifetime average of 19 mpg. The lowest I have ever got was a 59.5 mpg tank. The first owner lived in the city and I believe only had a 3 mile commute to work.

How many miles are on the car, and what is the lifetime mpg? The odometer will show both of these at the same time.

Does she leave the climate control in auto or Econ?

To my knowledge the 2000 only came in manual transmission...so that question should be answered.

Some questions on the mileage:

Has she changed her driving style? Does she drive faster now than she used to? More traffic?

With that low of gas mileage I would look towards cleaning the EGR valve and EGR plate, since it is a 2000 and it probably has never been done. The mechanic should have been able to see that. This is a REALLY quick fix and shouldn't take more than $50 on gaskets and a night to soak the valve. Don't bring it to the mechanic for this, you can do this at home easily. There are many threads about it, including a few with pictures showing how to do it.

Possibly the Catalytic converter is clogging up. My mileage went from 65 down to 35 when it happened to me.

Also, a CV joint that is dragging can cause a huge drop.

I don't believe dirty EGR can cause a significant MPG drop. But you're right. it's a relatively simple fix for peace of mind and resolving herky-jerky conditions.

^ +1 If this is a car with odo reading above 100,000 miles, I think this is a real good possibility.

Redinsight2010: How many miles on the car now? Does it have the Bridgestone Potenza RE 92 tires on it?

Default Mpg

Its my first time, to ask a question, I bought Insight 2000 model with 153000 miles on it, have put 4000 miles more on it, without any major problem, but i have the same problem of low mileage,48 mpg, wish to do 70-80 mpg, where to find EGR valve and the plate in the car, catalytic converter is v dirty, any good place to buy? How about installing the grid charger to charge up battery? any driving techniques to improve mpg? I have changed spark plug twice and replaced # 3 coil too, it didn't help, Any suggestions? please help.
