Default Duh! Just found Lean burn after 120K HCH miles

Well this is rather embarrassing. After replacing the upper O2 Sensor in our 2003 HCH CVT w/175K miles, I cleared the P1166 with the ultragauge I use in the Insight and took it for a drive. I was stunned to see it going in & out of Lean Burn like the Insight does. I had heard some Gen 1 HCHs had LB, but never had any idea mine did. We've driven it 120K miles

The check engine light has been on for years with a P0420, but when I checked recently all I found was the P1166. I guess in my defense, I never heard of LB until researching and buying the Insight 18 mo. ago.

BTW, I changed the plugs for the first time, too. They looked perfect even after 175K miles.

That's really to bad you didn't know about it for the first 120k miles. Here's to another 120k!

It's actually easier to get into lean burn in the HCH than the Insight too... as the assist will come on at the bottom of the range to try and keep you in it!

But no matter what I do, HCH mileage = Insight mileage - 20 mpg for me.

huh....

What O2 sensor does it take? What is it's emissions rating?

I wasn't aware that any CVT HCH has lean burn, only 1st gen MTs.

1st gen HCH is available in:

MT non-lean burn
MT lean burn
CVT non-lean burn
CVT lean burn

You can actually see the engine options in the engine types setting when you go to search for parts on Majestic Honda's site (the lean burn ones are the "L" coded ones)

Oh wow, interesting. Good to know!! Do you know how to tell by looking at the car? We plan on buying a 1st gen HCH MT, and I definitely want lean burn.. lol.

I dunno, I just test drove it and did the insight thing to get it into lean burn (except at slightly lower mpgs) of letting off the gas at the halfway point on the mpg readout and then felt for the slight drop in power/gas mileage to bump up that signifies lean burn. I think otherwise the cats probably look different, I could probably take a pic of mine if you want to compare. Or maybe you could call Honda with the VIN, I know they can look up stuff like the in-service date, maybe they can tell you if the original sticker tag was for ULEV or SULEV. Also: a little info on determining the lean burn/non lean burn-ness of an 05 gen 1:

The Sensor before the cat is Denso 192400-1110 Air/Fuel Sensor.

I had also heard here at IC that lean burn was avail on some CVT HCHs and CVT Insights in other countries. I had also read that CVT cars were SULEV and MT was ULEV, but sure enough, I have the same ULEV window sticker in the LR window of the HCH that I do in the Insight.

My wife drives the HCH and she says the CEL came back on. I assume it is the P1420. I think I'll do the 02 spacer to get the light off since I now see the danger of just living with the light on. I don't know how long we had the P1166.

My HCH was throwing code p0134 which is an O2 sensor problem. Having just received the 80,000 mile warranty extension letter from Honda I took the car down to Honda for warranty replacement.

Should have read letter more carefully. Evidently the HCH has 3x O2 sensors and the "primary" is not covered by the warranty extension. The local Honda dealer wanted $400 for the part and $100 to put it in!

Ended up getting a Denso 234-9005 Oxygen Sensor from Amazon for $95 or so, plus a special split deep well socket to put it in. The job wasn't too much harder than changing a spark plug.

Evidently these sockets can be loaned out from auto parts places for free.

Anybody know why the HCH has 3 different O2 sensors?

Hmmm, I didn't think the CVT had lean burn either...

The "California" models all lack lean burn, as I recall.

I kinda wish mine was a "California" model. The mileage was within 1 MPG but the "California" model was much, much cleaner.
