Default HCHI Intake temperature

Well this past weekend i finally took my 05 HCH out for the whole weekend instead of just driving it once to the store or something. I also got around to uninstalling my Ultragauge from my MT insight. I noticed some strange behavior. While i was driving 63mph (fast i know ) with cruise control on i had intake temps going as high as 105° and wasn't in lean burn. I backed off 1-2mph and was able to maintain lean burn at that speed. Well the intake temps went all the way down to 55° (ambient was low 30's).

Can anyone explain this? Sure the engine could be running cooler, but this doesn't explain 105° intake temps. Maybe honda designed an actual hot air "mod" for the HCH's? I was going to put a rad block in my car before the trip, but the typical spot on the insight is blocked on the HCH with plastic, and i didn't feel like digging into it. ok any thoughts or diagrams or exploded views?

My thought was.. if the air intake snorkel is on the back side of the radiator like on the Insight..when not in lean burn, maybe the engine was just losing that much heat? Lean burning may have kept the thermostat mostly closed..

Did you set the ultragauge to read MAP vs. MAF.

I need to get my hands on some diagrams, or just dig around the engine bay alittle and see where things are located. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought i read somewhere that lean burn makes the engine burn hotter even though it's burning less fuel. Drive to work today i was really annoyed with the car taking forever to reach 165° and lean burn only kicking in at 170ish. Winter might finally be here.

I never received a instruction book with my ultragauge so i just fly by the seat of my pants. I Tried finding one on their website and couldn't find anything. Why would changing MAP to MAF change my intake temperature reading?

It does, but it seems most pronounced under heavy load situations. The car won't allow lean burn and a heavy load.

Lean burn increases the overall efficiency of the engine.. I'll assume it's similar to the Insight engine overall, just with an extra cylinder. More efficiency = less waste heat going out the radiator.

I'm not really sure if that's what is happening here, but it seems plausible. I assume the HCH's intake tract isn't special in any way..

Ultragauge does have the instruction manual on line. IICR it' like 51 pages long.
I'll see if I can find the link. I think the default setting is at MAF. They were very specific about checking to see if you have a MAP.
Be right back.

We're talking about Intake Air Temperature, not MAP or MAF.
