Default HCH1 Tyre Choices

Having just bought a HCH1 I'm looking to change the crap tyres it is fitted with for some decent ones with the lowest rolling resistance I can find.

Luckily in the EU from November 2012 all new tyres have to be rated for RR which at least gives you a chance to select tyres based on that parameter.

This site is the only UK tyre website I have found that lets you sort tyres by RR.

Search Results: 195/60 R15 H Summer tyres - mytyres.co.uk

The link shows the HCH1 tyre size. Looks like I will go for the Continental EcoContact 5 or the Bridgestone Ecopia EP150 as they are the best rated tyres for RR in UK. (B Grade)

Using the same website for G1 insight tyres the best available is only (C Grade) for RR

Search Results: 165/65 R14 79T - mytyres.co.uk

Default Mytyres.co.uk

I recommend mytyres, have purchased 6 tyres (two orders) in the last few months, their warehouse is in Germany, and the order was despatched promptly and fulfilled ahead of quoted delivery date.

Delivery was trackable by website, tyres were also fresh from manufacture week/year on sidewall.

Did not use their recommended fitting service, I use a local tyre fitter nearer to home.

I am happy with my Continentals, I recommend going for the 'XL' (extra load) configuration as the strengthened side walls allows higher air pressures.

Wait, the UK HCH1 has 195/65/R15s? Are you sure about that? In the US, the alloys on the HCH1 were 14 inch and took 185/70/R14s... the HCH2 had 195/65/R15s.

Does your car have the honda 4x100 bolt pattern (US HCH1), or the newer 5 lug (US HCH2)? If they are 15" with a 4 bolt pattern, I'd love to see a picture of what they look like, because 185/70/R14 is a weird size, and there are no LRR choices for it here except the stock B381 (and 1 other tire, and a snow tire), but there are 24 different options in 195/65/R15.

Note: I looked high and low and couldn't find anything but a cheap off brand Chinese made tire for the 2 I replaced yesterday here... if you see something called "Primewell" stay far, far away... the LOUDEST tire I've ever heard on a car and dropped me 2 MPG on the return leg of my 700 mile road trip.

My wheels have the four stud standard UK HCH1 pattern.

I now have the continental B rated eco contact tyres fitted and it def rolls better.
Going on a 300 mile trip on 28th so will see how it goes then.

Needs some dry weather to get a proper test but is been raining in UK for the last month!!

Test Thoughts

Well the Continental tyres are quite strange, it's as if you have two different tyres fitted which change at the flip of a switch. I suppose that's why they have a good rating for RR and wet weather performance.

In the wet they stick like glue but there is a noticeable mpg hit.
In the dry mpg goes up by at least 5mpg during eco driving.

Very much affected by wet/dry road surface, in decent warm dry weather they might be quite an eye opener.

Default A rated RR tyre now available

Search Results: 195/60 R15 H Summer tyres - mytyres.co.uk

I see an A rated rolling resistance tyre has come onto the market for Uk owners who need a new set.

On the same website I searched for the lowest rolling resistance for the 1st gen Insight (165/65/14) and the best available is only 'C rated' - the Michelin Energy Saver and Pirelli Cinturato.

On this website the only better tyre is the one I have, the B rated Continental EcoContact 5 in 165/70/14. I look forward to some A rated for Insight owners in due course...

Default Avon ZT5 from Mytyres

For the G1 Insight, the Avon ZT5 is a low cost alternative (£40 each), rated CC for LRR and wet braking.

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rsh...by=Lable_1roll

I have a pair of ZT5 s on the front of my G1. B391 on the rear.

The mpg return is less than the B391, by about 4 to 5% the noise about the same, dry braking in far better, to trip the ABS takes a lot more effort.

My requested tyre, Goodyear Efficientgrip for the Insight in a B or A for LRR. Not much hope of this I reckon

working on my second HCH1 Civic now I have just had installed a set of 195/60/15 88v Goodyear EfficientGrip performance tyres, they are b rated for RR and A rated for wet grip at 69db
also had a full 4 wheel camber/caster/toe adjustment done on the car,

I have now noticed an instant improvement on the car and the MPG.
All I need now is for Peter to get back from his holidays so I can buy some toys
this will enable me then to rocket from 61.8mpg to the 80+ my other HCH1 is currently achieving
