I have a 2005 Civic Hybrid, in California they are supposed to have a 10 year 150000 mile warranty on the IMA battery. My car has a bad IMA battery but the dealer is refusing to honor the warranty as they say my car is ULEV and not SULEV is this accurate? I was aware of no distinction between the two, who should i be talking to about this? Id appreciate any advice
Assuming you are in Ca,
Do you have any CEL codes?
NO codes, no replacement.
Need more info. Miles, etc.
Call the Honda Service line in Torrence.

Just In California, manufacturers of SULEVs can be given a partial credit for producing a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) and so a vehicle of this type can be administratively designated as a Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (PZEV). In order to qualify as a PZEV, a vehicle must meet the SULEV standard and, in addition, have zero evaporative emissions from its fuel system plus a 15-year/150,000 mi (241,402*km) warranty on its emission-control components.
1 gen civics are ulev engines they have lean burn, but lean burn is dirty. Even as that was world class clean then, The downfall of lean-burn technology is increased exhaust NOx emissions (due to higher heat and cylinder pressure) and a somewhat narrower RPM power-band (due to slower burn rates of lean mixtures
Its throwing both p1600 and p1449, i just reset the codes a bit ago. They told me over the phone my VIN is not eligible and the reason they gave was i had ulev not sulev if i had sulev they say they would replace the battery under the 10 yr/150000 mile warranty. Im just confused didnt realize that there was a distinction between cars in the same model year as far as warranty coverage goes.

Interesting info, should this affect warranty coverage on my hybrid battery, thought the warranty extension in California was effective on all models for that year?

Don't know but my year, 2003 it's covered a long extra 10 years because they was a class action law suite we won. because Honda had a filmware update that tone down the ima system to less aggressive to prolong battery life, and this lower the stock mpg below what car was advertise at. Seems 2003 is out too. Democrat
Yea I was under the impression that the class action law suit was for the 03-05 civic hybrids and extended the battery warranty to 10yr/150000 miles. Which is why I thought my battery was still under warranty. I just have no idea how to proceed after being denied by the dealer or if im in the right or wrong here. Just need some concrete info to proceed further.
I thought honda just extended the warranty to 9 years 90k miles from 8 years 80k miles this past summer. I believe that was what the paperwork I received in the mail said. I also have a 2005 with lean burn. I moved at the end of the summer so finding that paperwork when I get home won't be as easy as it should be.

If Honda won't cover a new battery, don't buy a replacement from them. There are a few members on this site that can sell you a rebuilt pack with better, brand new batteries for a lot less than Honda will charge.
