I was really getting frustrated with the 1st and 2nd grinding in my insight also. But then I learned to double-clutch. At first double clutching every time I went into 1st or 2nd while out of the speed range seemed a little cumbersome, but now after doing it for a couple of months, its become second nature, and my 1st/2nd gears rarely get to grind, because I always double-clutch.

its like learning to drive a manual car, at first all the gears changing etc seem complicated, but then after a while you become used to it, same with double clutching.

Default easiest way to remove axles without special tools

You can simply unbolt the A arms from their two pivot points. It is a cleaner area without grease, you have no chance of hurting a seal, and there are no alignment specs to mess up. As my brother would say, Easy Peasy.

Default MT oil leak

Hi Baboracus,
How did you finally resolve the manual transmission oil leak from the oil seals?

I swapped out my tranny without too much trouble but the passenger side oil seal started to leak.
However the replacement oil seal is leaking worse than the original.

The seals are very easy to damage while being installed. They need to be lubricated quite well and carefully tapped in. Most of the seal should push in by hand, then the remainder can be pushed in via a plastic drift and gentle hammer blows at alternating points around the seal.

Also, the axle stub needs to be lubricated well and carefully inserted into the seal so that the splines don't tear it.

Finally, the seals are directional. There is a different part number for passenger vs. driver side and it does matter. The grease channels are cut differently.

When inserting either new bearings or new seals, found they make it easy and I don't damage them

Default MT Oil Leak

Aaron, Mark, Leeper, thank you for the replies.
I doubt that I damaged it during the installation. The axle end was already well lubricated with MT oil before the install. I had purchased seals for the passenger and driver side of the tranny. The passenger has a larger outer diameter. So I can confirm that I have the correct seal.
I can only imagine that the retaining spring that tightens the seal around the axle shaft popped off. I'll take off the axle this weekend and see if I can determine the cause of the seal leak.
Thanks again.
