I had to replace the transmission in my 01 MT at 100,000 miles because of the input shaft bearing also. Whats up with this? Why do they fail so easily?

It was about 1400$ for a used transmission installed. I hope the new one lasts. Is there anything that can be done about this problem? A manual transmission should last the life of the car..... Pretty ridiculous.

Unfortunately, I've learned from my mechanic that 1st and 2nd gear are the weakest links in the 2000-2006 manual trans Insights when mine had to be rebuilt. But I still love the car.

Find another dealer. Majestic Honda has a new transmission assembly for a 2000 Insight here:

Honda Automotive Parts.

Look under Engine - Transmission Assembly

I'm getting that 2nd gear grinding problem too .... 163,000mi on a 2002 .... has anyone found that this symptom could be explained by anything other than worn syncro? ... transmission oil change or worn clutch possibly? ...

a local shop has offered a used transmission with a lifetime warranty(!) plus new clutch for $2200, which is less than the dealer price for either new or used .... there's also a site called Transmission Planet Remanufactured and Rebuilt Transmissions which sells rebuilts ....

1st and 2nd gear syncho and bearings are the weakest links in the Insight manual trans. Lifetime guarantee? sounds great, as long as they stay in business. $2,200-and if it includes new throw-out bearing, resurfaced or new flywheel, and all the clutch trimmings? New slave cylinder? all new clutch fluid?
