Default Trans Overhaul

Well, it looks like my 01 insight needs a trans rebuild. Its a 5 speed and some of the bearings are going out. The dealer wants $3700 to do it. Thats crazy. I am waiting to hear back from the local Honda shop to see how much it is from them.

What should I pay for this repair? I figure I may as well do the clutch too while its apart.

Sounds like the amount I paid at a dealer. Try an independent hybrid repair shop. I've saves thousands over the years this way on major repairs and 110k services.

I just took it to a trans shop where my father in law knows the owner. He thinks it just needs an input shaft bearing. Hopefully he is right.

Oh boy - M.T. bearing availability

You may wish to check out the above thread started recently. I was able to get the bearing from the honda dealer in Indy. Haven't started this project yet, but if you could keep documenting yours and if perhaps photos' are possible, there are plenty of people here that would appreciate it.
thanks
Wayne

Well it turns out that it needs a few internal trans bearings, so I am just going to have them do it. Its about 1300 for the trans overhaul. It includes all new bearings and seals. I may have them do the clutch and flywheel while they are in there too...

I got the car back yesterday. They replaced all the trans bearings, gaskets and seals. Also they put in a new LUK clutch and resurfaced the flywheel. The car is MUCH smoother now. It cost about $1900 and has a 1 year warranty.

Next I need to clean the EGR...

Excellent! That is much cheaper than what the dealer wanted to charge you, the warranty is definitely worth some peace of mind too, along with being all set with a new clutch too, I would have also opted to have the clutch replaced for any manual transmission pull as its much easier to have them do it when things are already apart than going back again.

Excellent price for the Trans job and clutch. I paid double that at a dealer.

And the new clutch started to chatter when engaged after only 20k. I asked for a new fly wheel, but I bet they just re-used the old one and didn't resurface it.

Glad you're back on the road. It's a little late, but if anyone finds themselves in a similar predicament in the future brand new manual transmission assemblies are available from Honda for around $1700 plus S&H. Faced with your original $3700 quote that is the path I would have taken if I could not find a low mileage salvage unit.

Default Told Honda doesn't sell new 5 speed trans for my 2000 Insight

I need new synchros (2nd gear is getting ridiculous) so I called my dealer. They said Honda no sells new transmissions for this car..seems crazy to me since they sold the 5-speeds for a while beyond 2000. Am I getting the run around here? Should I try other dealers?
