If the primary sensor is bad, then replace it. Ask for an auto repair estimates to your local dealer for the replacement. Mine was doing the same thing but it was my secondary o2. Light would go off then come back on once in awhile. Eventually it will go completely bad. Id go ahead and replace it now man.
I have a 2000 manual transmission with 245,000 on it. When I bought it in August the guy had been driving it for 2 years with the Check Engine Light on and the life time MPG read 47. I'm guessing it could never go into lean burn because the LAF sensor was bad. Since I replaced it I reset the life time MPG and now I'm running at 63 MPG for the time that I've owned the vehicle. Here is the link for the sensor that I got: Amazon.com: Bosch 15393 Oxygen Sensor, OE Type Fitment: Automotive: Reviews, Prices & more
Good luck and let us know how it comes out for you!
Wow! One month ago I bought 2000 MT with 272K miles. No error code lights and Monday I just installed brand new Bumblebee battery. It had the same lifetime MPG of 47 and I can't seem to get more than 45 MPG also.
Time to change LAF???

Nope......You are using too much assist.
(Tighten up "the loose nut on the steering wheel".)
Everything is based on the "LOAD" on the engine.

Can anyone explain exactly what all that crap is in the EGR plate, where and what it comes from? EGR - exhaust gas recirculation: a lot of unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas being recirculated? What causes unburnt hydrocarbons? Rich fuel mixture? OP had to replace his O2 sensor: Maybe a bad O2 sensor leads to unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas, which get recirculated but then muck-up the EGR plate? This all sounds good to me. Is it right?
EGR= Exhaust Gas Recirculation.(sp?)
Most prominent in "High Load" situations = Lots of throttle opening at Low RPM.
(MY opinion)

Well il try to explain it. The crap is basically soot, oils, moisture, and other chemicals that mixed together and form that "sludge". (i do have a technical book that actually brakes it down as what it is-i just cant find it). Now what causes the hydrocarbons is the burning of fuel. even if 100% efficiency was attained you still get them-they are the recombination of chemicals after being burned. Now, as to if a rich mixture, bad o2 leads to these-you are correct. It adds more to the system (vs max efficiency). Now, the bad o2 isn't as quick to be a major cause because the ecm will revert to a base program, keeping the AF mixture somewhat close. It is on the long term it will have added more hydrocarbons due to being non functional.
On the drive in this morning I did not see any change... got about 51 MPG.
So I should replace both LAF O2 sensor and EGR spool valve to be sure???
(O2 threw code P1165 last week)
Before my son bought my 2000, it was throwing P1164. However, lean burn still worked (verified this with my OBDIIC&C gage), so I didn't have to hurry to replace it.
