No more shorts after disconnecting the rear speakers, that's why I've isolated it to a rear speaker / wiring fault.
Interesting idea about impedances, I'll check out the specs of the kickers vs some normal midbass drivers.
It's funny though, when I had the old factory deck with these speakers, I had no issues. When I first installed this head unit, I went a week without issue. Then all of a sudden, after a long road trip, I started getting into this "protect" mode. That's why I'm more leaning towards wiring vs. speakers. Additionally, at first, I was able to reset the head unit and it would play properly for awhile, as in another week or two. Most recently though, before I disconnected the rear speakers, it would only last 5 minutes under motion. The symptoms got progressively worse. I also noticed that even when the rear speakers were connected, there was no sound coming out of it. When I first installed the head unit, all speakers worked fine.
At the end though, I could reset the head unit and play it indefinitely if the car was still though, but with sound only coming from the front speakers.
If it was the speakers, shouldn't I have seen the fault right away? How would I be able to have a week of usage without this problem?
