Just picked up my 2006 Insight from dealership where I had exhaust donut bolts and springs replaced, torn CV boot and crankshaft seal (part number 91212-PWA-003) replaced. Got maybe ten miles down the road and the batteries had just reached a full charge on the indicator on the dash when suddenly the IMA light came on and I watched in horror as my battery indicator began to go from a full charge (it dropped one bar at a time QUICKLY) to just one bar left. I have 156,756 miles on the car, so I know nothing will be covered by warranty. What do you guys think is the problem? The batteries and charging system have been working fine up until this point. I will be glad to give any other information on driving habits, etc., if needed. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. I need to know if it will hurt to continue to drive it this way until I can get it back to the shop which is about 60 or so miles from my home. Thanks!!
Take it to the dealer. You have 84,000 miles on the battery warranty.

Well scraple,
It looks like you have two wrong answers so far. Your battery is not covered under waranty.
It sounds like a negative recal happened. It has happened to most everyone on this forum. After state of charge dropping, did the car start charging at 4 bars and then after a few minutes the SOC started going back up? If so, it was a negative recal. Plenty on this forum about that.
It will not harm anything to continue to drive, as long as the 12v battery light (not IMA) is not on.

So what does the 157,000, ten year warranty apply to? I did take it to the dealer, but haven't heard back from them yet. After reading some of the other posts I was hoping maybe it was still in warranty.
Randerson 0428-- it must not be negative recall because the SOC never went back up. It stayed at one bar and never tried to charge again. Nice bit is that with no resistance due to no charging, it free rolls now and I get great gas mileage on fairly flat terrain.
It sounds like it was a negative recal followed by an IMA light, which will generally stop all assist/regen.
I thought the 10 year, 157k mile warranty applied to all cars, '00 through '06, but I guess that isn't the case.

Thanks so much for your reply. I saw another post that said 2002 thru 2006 had 157,500 mile ten year warranty, so that's why I thought it was covered. I don't know that the battery is actually the problem, since the IMA light came on and car went from full charge to no charge-- or rather one bar (on the indicator) in just a few seconds. I watched the gauge drop one bar at a time til there was just one bar left and it never charged again. It was a very sudden event. The car had been charging fine before this.
Yeah, that's a typical negative recal. Generally they aren't followed by an IMA light, though it's certainly possible.
My bet is on P1447 - Battery Module Deterioration. Essentially this means the system has determined the capacity of the pack is inadequate.
