Default Drivetrain Noise

I just bought a 2000 Insight with 108xxx miles (and another with 237xxx miles . The 237 has a got a bad case of the herky jerkys so I am going to look at the CAT, clean the EGR plate etc.

Anyway the 108 has whirring/clacking noise coming from the transmission when I release the clutch (ie it doesn't make the noise with the clutch pedal pressed in). From the searches I have done this would appear to be a throw out bearing or the ISB? I plan on bringing it to an independent shop for the repair, but want to have an idea of what it is before going there (I am not quite prepared to do it myself).

Thanks

Sounds like the Input Shaft Bearing (ISB) going bad, if the throw out bearing is going bad it will be heard when the clutch pedal is pushed down.

Most likely the ISB.

And damnit man, share the details about your purchases! We want all the juicy details!

I will try and post the details tomorrow in the main forum. So far I have driven thirty miles of city/highway/freeway with two re92's and two winter tires (not even inflated properly) a bad ISB (not sure if that will affect mileage) and am averaging 76 MPG (according to the gauge). So I figure I will only get better once I learn to drive it.

If the noise is there in first and second gear than it is the ISB.

If you are having someone do it for you perhaps check what they'll charge you for the prats, usually garages will charge big mark-ups on the parts even though they buy them at wholesale prices... you can order the ISB for @$23 online or so and maybe save some bucks. The only parts you should need would be the ISB and a quart of MT fluid. The labor should only be about 4 hours so if you get a quote of $1000 or more you're being very generous.

It is annoying how a $23 part can cost you close to $1K!

I had my ISB replaced a few months back and had them put in a new clutch at the same time. Even though the clutch still had some life in it, putting a new one in while the transmission was torn apart seemed a good idea.

What is the failure mode of the ISB? Hard ($$$) or soft?
How long from first note of the extra noise until failure?
Can I just turn up the radio and live with it until the clutch wears out?
I have ~ 155k miles, and I'm very scared

The ISB repair really is VERY simple to do.

Get the Honda service manual & it gives very good instructions on the proceedure.

I'd estimate it could be done in less than a day iff you have the tools to hand.

Well I also notice the sound in third gear, but not so much at highway speeds (55-65). Does this still point to ISB? Or is it something else? I plan on getting it repaired within the next month (unless there is a reason to do it immediately as a previous reply asked?)

Well I went to Kennedy Transmission and they claim it is not a bearing, but something to do with the clutch and want $1150 for parts and labor. I have an independent mechanic that will do it for less so I am going to get a third opinion.

What would be the differences between the clutch and ISB going bad (from what I can tell the trans shifts fine and clutch engagement is normal)
