So I started my car up this morning (like any other morning) and for some reason a CEL came on. Since I don't have time to run my OBD II scanner, I drove to work and just got home. I realized my engine was bogging at around 4,000 RPM but everything else was fine (I think).
Anyways, I just checked the codes and found out that P1607 (from previous threads I searched for) is ECM PCM malfunction. I found out through the previous owner's paperwork that the ECU was re-programmed when the car got its IMA batter changed under TSB warranty.
Also, the P0134 is the upper LAF o2 sensor.
My question is:
1. Will the o2 sensor cause a malfunction at the ECM or vise versa? If so, which one should I replace first to correct the issue? (I ask this because it threw two codes at once when the CEL came on)
2. If it is an o2 sensor issue, which o2 sensor do you suggest that does the job but doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I read from the previous posts that the Bosch 15393 works but does anyone have any input on this?
What year is your car? The first year or two were 5 wire upstream sensors, not sure of the year but my understanding is that after a few years they switched the upstream sensor to a more normal 4 wire. I have a 2000 and the recent post was also for a model year 2000. I believe the 5 wire is from 2000-03 but some one out there may have better info for what year they made the change.
Bosch 15393 or NTK 24301 is the correct LAF O2 sensor.
As for the ECM error.. eh, clear it and see if it comes back.

So I did a reset and got a Check Engine light again. It came up with P1607... Dammit. So does anyone know what I should do? Buy a used ECU? Shouldn't this come with warrantee since it was last re-programmed by the Honda dealership?
Contact Honda, it may be covered still under warranty since they worked on it. Can't hurt to check. Ebay is your next choice or order new one but I'm going to guess a brand new one might need to have software loaded on it, not sure?
Nah, a new ECM should be a drop in replacement as long as it's the same year.
Seems odd though. It could be a wiring problem, but I guess something could actually be wrong with the ECM.
I'm not finding that code in the Advanced Diagnostics.

So something strange happened. I went to work in the evening with the engine light on. Now I just came back and while I was driving back, the engine light turned off. The car is no longer bogging at high RPMs and it is driving like normal. I am completely baffled. I used my scanner and pulled no faults or codes. I am going to drive it to work tomorrow and see if it turns on again... really strange...
Not as strange as you may think. If the ECM doesn't detect the fault, usually in three drive cycles, it will clear the CEL. This is a good thing overall, though intermittent problems can be aggravating.
I think we need to find out more specifically what P1607 is. It could just be a faulty sensor, "ECM Error" doesn't make much sense.
If it comes back, pull the blink code.
