Default Air Conditioning "Whooshing" Sound

My A/C makes an odd "whooshing" sound when I switch it on. It sounds like its coming from somewhere behind the glovebox area on the passenger side (LH side on UK cars), although it appears to be blowing icy cold.

When I'm just using the blower/heater with the AC off the sound dissapears.

Anybody got any thoughts at to a possible cause please?

Junk in the squirrel cage of the motor. It's easy to get to. There was a post a long time ago about leaves, etc in the blower.

Does it sound like a vaporous gas leaking out of something? I've heard other AC systems do this and it usually has to do with the compressor turning off and the high pressure freon going through the orface to the low pressure side. Can almost have a gurgle to it sometimes.

Mine sounds very similar aswell, almost a gas leak/motor working somewhere in the HVAC. Could well be something to do with the system, its not as effective as it used to be either so probably worth a regas.

I'm off to get system checked just after lunch, leak check, efficiency check & re-gas/lube if required.

OK, results are in on the A/C re-gas, against my better judgement I popped into my local Kwik Fit to let them have a go at the A/C.

I thought it was actually working well before I took the car in, how wrong was I.

They did a temp test with the A/C on before doing any work, air from the vents was 14c.

They proceeded to do a re-gas, firstly emptying the old gas (0.07 kg removed) and the old lubricant (3 grams removed). Then they did a vac test at -40psi for 20mins, the vacuum held stable during this time indicating no leaks.

They finally replenished the system with 0.55kg of refrigerant and 14ml of lubricant.

The system was tested with an output air temp of 3c.

The cost for the work was a very reasonable £49.

How much was it? Where did you get it done?

Sorry Peter, should have said in the post, have updated. It was Kwik Fit and the cost was just £49. I'm very happy.
