Default Upshift Light Whilst In Fifth Gear

Was chatting to a friend last night who is getting an odd problem with his Insight that I couldn't explain.

When crusing in fifth gear he occasionally gets the upshift light illuminating, has anybody come accross this before? I was wondering if it could be one of the position switches on the transmission giving a bad signal.

Sounds very reasonable assumption to me. That's the only way it would know which gear it is in. Could be the neutral switch if that is a seperate beast? I've never looked at the
circuits. clutch switch also a possibility?

Huh. Weird.

Just had a thought though. Since the upshift light has no purpose to us in 5th gear, I wonder if we could repurpose it as a "Lean-burn" light, or something.

(Frankly, I have little use for my upshift light ALL the time, likewise with the downshift light, since up illuminates at useless times for my commute through rolling hills, and I rarely see the down light, unless I'm really bogging it.)

Someone pointed out to me that there is a neutral switch, a reverse switch and VSS output on the transmission. All other values must be calculated.

How is the clutch height at engagement? Do they drive with their foot resting on the clutch? If the clutch is slipping, it might make the computer think it's in a lower gear.
What about speedometer and odometer, are they accurate? If they're off because of poor connections or anything else, it could impact the calculation too. Those speedometer correction things they sell with some tire/wheel packages could too.

I like the idea of a lean burn light...but how?

About the upshift light problem, I would investigate the manifold sensor or the brake lights. As I recall, when I coast engine off, key on, the ∆ light is on until I punch the brake or the throttle.

How? Easy; Peter's done a bunch of work sniffing the BATTSCI and METSCI buses to figure out what messages to send to make the cluster do different things. I don't recall if he's found a message for those lights, but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to figure out, assuming that one of the other computers in the car determines when they should go on. If the decision to illuminate those lights happens in the cluster based off of other inputs, we probably can't control them when we want to.

As for our circuit deciding when we're in lean burn, just monitor the O2 sensor lines and make the determination that way.

If you want a lean burn light amongst a host of other stuff you need my new OBDIIC&C gizmo it has that feature There is no shift signal on the metscii lines asfaik. The gauge/cluster is wired directly to the ecm as well i suspect it is one of those lines, we have never investigated them.

Didn't Julian Edgar do this with a voltage detector board for Autospeed.com?
