Hello, it appears that very few Insight owners have a P0171 code. Just thought I would finish the tread I started. After I replaced the LAF with a NTK-24301 without pulling the negative battery lead the car performed a bit odd. The assist was intermittent, the MPG went up to 99 MPG for a bit and the shift indicator wouldn’t work. After about 50 miles everything started to work better. Assist was back, MPG within normal and the shift indicator started working, Still got the P0171 CEL though and intermittent assist latter.
Pulled the negative battery lead - performed idle relearn test drove and the car perform like it had with poor, 50 MPG ,and P0171 code.
Put fuel cleaner in (Techtron) drove like a race car driver for 200 miles- no difference.
Finally took to local Honda dealer to have them clean the fuel injectors. They cleaned them and offered to help diagnose the P0171 CEL. They could not check fuel pressure since they did not have a special part to connect their gauge o the fuel rail!! They advised to bring it back in a week when they got the part from California.
I decided to clean the EGR exhaust plate. PIA, last bottom bolt to remove. finally got it with a 1/4'" sockeT wrench from Harbor Freight. It was very clogged but after cleaning no improvement in MPG or P0171.
After much more research on this sight I decided to check the fuel pump. I found that that the internal plastic hose connection from the discharge pump where it connects to the upper discharge point at the top of the pump appeared to be glued or siliconed. I pulled this off and went to a local auto parts dealer hoping to replace the line. Found out that only plastic hose with no fittings are allowed in fuel tanks. It takes a special tool to melt the plastic tube onto the fittings and their machine was not working.
For a temporary fix I super-glued the plastic and placed a small fuel line rated tube over the plastic tube and clamped it.
I put the car back together and so far the P0171 code is gone. The MPG is suddenly back to 70 MPG from 50 MPG. A side benefit is that for the first time in 3 years the car starts up without stalling.
Looking back, I am wondering if the PO171 went away briefly when I filled up since the leaking upper hose would have been immersed in fuel??
Hope this helps someone with a P0171.
Kind of hate to sell the Insight now that I finally got it working again.
