Default Cold weather starting getting funny

I have a 00 5 sp and with winter coming I have noticed a starting issue when the temp drops. When I hit the key, it will idle at a meager 500 rpm for about 2-3 seconds than die. On the second try, I will give it a little gas, and it takes off.
Any ideas? I did see a post with simmilar cirmcistances but not much of a definitive answer except a possible IAC problem. Any thing else?

BTW, no codes except for ABS and EPS come up when I jump the connector. Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure if you are referring to my post:

Stalling Upon Startup?

But, my problem happened one morning in February of 2010, a year and 8 months ago. I should note, it has never happened since.

Hope this helps,
Bryan

EPS 23= Engine speed circuit.
ABS 54= ABs Fail/Safe relay.
ABS 61= Low FSR +B voltage.

Check the condition of your 12V battery. Colder temps will require higher amps on starting. Sounds like everything is related to low rpm and low 12V.

I think he's probably referring to the thread I started on the subject. I never did find out what was wrong, but the problem went away as temperatures rose. I experienced the same thing though. The car would start with IMA, studder and die, but then fire right up on the second try. Subsequent starts during the day were also normal, even after sitting for ~4 hours.

The "first start" is probably just the IMA battery turning the engine , seems your engine does not start actually.

It could be that no fuel is going through the injectors on the first try. A leak in the fuel line that the fuel escapes from , the line is depressurized, and needs the first try to build pressure.

It definitely starts. If it happens again this winter, I'll take a video. When I start the car, I flick my wrist very fast. The engine stumbles and studders at very low RPM, causing a lot of shake. If you tap the gas at this point, it will catch and climb to the normal ~2000RPM. Sometimes this happens on its own, sometimes it dies. But the 2nd start is always normal.

Kinda odd.

I had the same problem with the engine stalling on start up. I would have to give it gas when starting otherwise it would stall every time.

After repairing the fuel pump this problem went away.

Do you guys just put the key and immediately twist it to start? If so you may want to pause before going to the actual start position. Possibly the fuel pressure drops overnight and there is not sufficient pressure at startup. My chevy truck you can actually hear the fuel pump. First thing in the morning I twist the key to the run position, then wait about 10 seconds until the fuel pump stops before starting.

In response to jlingenf's entry about repairing to the fuel pump, did you replace the fuel pump or do something with the filter or "sock in the tank"? Im currious as to what was done. Also, that does make sense about lettting the pump build up pressure for a few seconds.
