Default Climate control light issue

I've got a 2006 Gen 1 Insight. I notice that all of the buttons for the climate control are lit when the headlights are one except the "mode" and "fan speed" buttons. Naturally, these are the two I use most often and it would be nice to see them at night. Of course, I can guess which one to push and usually be right. So, two questions. Am I right in assuming these two buttons should be lit like the rest and, can this be fixed with new bulbs (not that I relish the idea of trying to get take the climate control unit out of the dash!) or are the lights integrated into the unit so the whole thing would have to be replaced (not likely that's going to happen!).

Thanks.

Gary

I have the 04-06 bezel and all buttons are illuminated. Typically there is a bulb that you can replace in each button. My original 2001 bezel had those illuminated as well. I'll look at the back of the climate control tomorrow night and see how hard the bulbs are to get to once the unit is off the dash (the 01 assembly is sitting out in my cold garage)

Hey Jeff,

Have you had a chance to check your bezel to see how the button lights are accessed/removed/installed? Also, how does one go about getting the bezel out of the dash?

Thanks.

Gary

Honda Automotive Parts

Looks like it's part 007, and is accessed from the back (so you'll probably have to pull the whole climate control unit to get to it). Unless there's enough room to reach around back there with the radio out?

It's similar to other Hondas. A few lights that illuminate the area around them. Looks like two different types, with two of each. Once you remove the bezel, these just pop right out and the bulb is nested into them. I suspect you have one or more bulbs burned out.

HTH:

I think there is a 5th on at the bottom next to the white plug. I forgot to circle that one.

Sam and Jeff,

Thanks much for your help! Now, for removing the bezel. Don't want to use a hammer or a crow bar 8>). I doubt trying to go through the radio opening would work with my big hands and no visibility back there. Any ideas?

The process is broken down in the service manual (which is available as a PDF free through this site).

Basically you remove the small cover to the right of the vent to gain access to one of the three screws. The other two are in the cluster area. I had to drop/lower the steering column (which is three screws for the column cover and four 12mm nuts to drop the column itself) in order to get my cluster bezel off. (That wasn't listed in the service manual, but made things a lot easier.) Be very carefule when prying the thing off. I cracked the plastic one one of the ones I was removing:

I didn't know that you can get manuals here. I'll try to find them. Thanks for the tip.

Sheesh, this sounds a lot more complicated than I'd hoped. No wonder why the previous owner probably didn't fix the lights! Sounds like basically the whole dash has to come off. I was hoping just the heater control area would come of separately…
