Default Popping Sound Under Breaking Left Front

Hey all
my 2000/130k miles has a very CV joint like popping sound when braking. However I don't hear it under power, which is when I'd expect it to sound off then again this time of year the fan and radio are on and I keep forgetting to listen for this.

I haven't had the wheels off yet, but Honda just gave it a multi-point inspection and I assume if the boot was torn they would have noticed it while checking brake linking thickness.

The weather is more cooperative tomorrow (no rain, snow and -5C/20F!!) so I should be able to get the car lifted and look around myself. Other than looking for slop and a torn boot can anyone suggest things to look for?

Thanks!
George
PS: Man I'm embarrassed to open this up again and notice I spelled braking incorrectly in my title

You can tell if it is a CVT joint. Put it in fifth gear with the ignition off. Release the parking brake. gently rock the car back and forth, see if the clunking noise is there.

Default What the popping noise turned out to be...

Thanks for the reply Willie. It sounds strange but I didn't actually get a chance to do that, every flat place I park is covered in snow and ice and every place that's free of ice is because it's on a hill.

Anyhow with a 3000km/1800mile trip coming up and another frigid weekend on the books I rolled it into my trusted garage (major plug for Wagorn's in Ottawa). They had diagnosed it as a bent hub assembly which had worn out the brake caliper. Estimated cost $550 using aftermarket parts.

Calipers from Honda are back-ordered in Canada until May so I'll see if I can find used parts, but they said it's safe to drive for now but don't let it go forever.

Thanks for the closer. I wish others would do the same. Too many posters never ever respond with a "cure". Hub assembly bent, must be from a wreck?

Willie

No problem happy to contribute a bit for a change, after getting so much help off folks sharing their knowledge here. And it drives me nuts when I'm trying to research something and there's no followup.

Cause was likely a sideways impact into a curb, happens all the time in our nasty winters.
