Ask for the old part they replaced.
I suspect it just forgot the key data and they have reprogrammed it.
Bit cynical i know.

I wonder if it's this:
[from a "Service News 021100.pdf in the repair files]
There's a picture of how to hold the key. Basically no metal, bundles of keys and such next to the Insight keyfob, and no quick flicks of the key.
"Intermittent No-Start inVehicles With Immobi [sic]

If you’re getting complaints from owners of immobilizer-equipped vehicles that the engine doesn’t crank (Preludes only) or it cranks but doesn’t start, find out the key ring setup (number of keys, key ring size, key fob material) before you plow ahead with extensive diagnostics. Too much metal near the transponder in the ignition key, coupled with a quick turn of the ignition switch, can interfere with the transponder’s code signal and prevent the engine from starting.

You can check if this is the problem by starting the engine with only the ignition key (that’s no key ring, no other keys, and no key fob). If the engine fires up, advise your customer to keep the ignition key on a separate key ring and—if a favorite fob has got to dangle from it—to make sure the fob is made from either plastic or leather."

I'm with Peter with his statement.
In the USA you are entitled to the parts they replaced, except warranty items.

well the actual Honda receipt has a different code - H39730S04G02 Unit Assy Immobi-

my thoughts were that somehow it has lost the code but generally I was too pleased to get the car back and working again to question their knowledge. I did wonder though why a new immobiliser unit didn't require the original keys to be programmed.

On the key fob front one of the keys tried had never been used or stored with others so I guess that avoids the contamination issue.

Digging further I think you're both right - yesterday I was told they could get the part in if they ordered by 5pm and it would cost £175 but the invoice just has menu prices ( whatever they are ) and a list of items such as lab, renewed immobiliser unit before the H39730S04G02 Unit Assy Immobi- so they could have just been quoting labour costs for diagnosis and reprogramming.
