My driving conditions are about the worst possible, I think. 30-60K miles/year, 90% of which is stop and go traffic in the Phoenix heat.

Any tips on what I can do to prevent further deterioration?

Just hit 272K miles on it.
Just keep a replacement motor in mind, and pick one up when a cheap one is close enough to fall into your lap.
My two cents... from a guy with the same miles!

I'm a little late to the conversation, but did the repairs repair the jerking issue? I am having that same issue with my car. I have been through every part but injectors, ecm and wiring (like yours was found bad).

I emailed Varak and he said this:
"There were two shorts in the main wiring harness leading to the coil for the 3rd cylinder. It took awhile for them to find it, but fixing the shorts solved the problem.

I was initially irked at the price, but then learned that a new wiring harness is over $700 for the part alone, so guess I shouldn't complain too much."

Seems I remember someone else having shorts in the wiring harness to the coil packs.
