Mine has been making noises when in drive and quits when in neutral, park or reverse. After studying the power flow schematics and hydraulic circuits I am allmost convinced it has to be a bearing in the planetary gear set. Soooo planning to remove and tear it down to find problem. I will get pics and keep all posted on what I find just waiting on full gasket/seal set prior to teardown, want to make sure I can really get parts first. If my theory is correct should be able to repair with all bearings, plantary set, seals gaskets and oil pump drive system for about $700.00. Really not afraid of repair since I have over 40 years experiance as professional mechanic and extensive experiance in automatic transmission rebuililding.

I think the high mileage CVT community would be eternally grateful for a follow up post when you've completed this

The CVT doesn't work with vodoo and incantations, it's just a transmission and with the spare parts listed by Honda as available, should be able to be serviced my anyone with a bit of experience and care. I look forward to your write up.

Obviously someone must be rebuilding them. I went to my transmission parts suppliers catalog and they list a master rebuild kit with steels and friction plates. Going to call them in the morning and check availability and cost have to be less than Honda and I have never had a problem with their parts / kits.

Awesome! I have mine apart on the bench with both flywheel and left side housings removed. If I get much farther I will try to take pictures as well. Admittedly I don't have any experience with auto trannies, but I have rebuilt a few manual ones.

Right now I am thinking I want to pull the start clutch and secondary drive gear off the drive pulley shaft to free the intermediate housing from the transmission housing. Does this sound right?

I found my problem bearing. It is the bearing holding the input CVT cone to the intermediate housing, right underneath the forward and reverse clutches.

It would be under #21 in this picture:

It stamped with "TMB" and "X8/40Px7"

Problem is, Honda's parts diagrams don't break down any of the Intermediate Plate Assembly. Is it possible to find this part? Willie Willford and Ecfool, can you help me track down a source for this bearing? I will try to find my calipers tomorrow to get accurate measurements of it if necessary.

Also, I will try to post some pics tomorrow if you like.

Here is where the bearing should be in the parts diagrams:

Also, here is the stamped number on the bearing race:
