Redleader:
You might want to look at this webpage where a creative solution was found to a bearing failure in the hch.

Wow. Thanks for that! It's crazy, I was thinking of doing a spacer like that as well. When I pulled the bearing off the CVT cone last night it had the NTN 6009C3 part number on it and just like this guy's HCH site said, that part number belongs to a 75x16x45 bearing where as mine has a 40mm bore.

Thanks for the link! I think I may be on the right track now!

Been busy this week just caught up on this post, me thinks this may be the "weak link" in this belt transmission. But now I am confused you said its same number as the civic unit but your Insight one measures 40mm instead of 45mm? So in other words the suggested replacement bearing will work without spacer sleeve?

I do need a custom sleeve. The bearing I pulled off of the input CVT pulley is 75 mm OD x 40 mm bore x 16 mm tall. The stamping on the bearing says NTN 6009C3 which refers to a 75 mm OD x 45 mm bore x 16 mm tall bearing, if you look it up in a bearing catalog. Honda had these customized.

My experience is exactly the same as the guy at this website: http://hchdoctorstransmissionpage.yolasite.com/ I am going to seek out the same solution as well with a 5 mm sleeve. I have a new bearing ordered already, too.

Welll GASMIZR is getting her guts ripped out this weekend, will see if its same bearing but my gut feeling says yes. May have a cure for the curse of the CVT here folks.

Default We have hope

There is hope!

My 2001 CVT Insight that I bought in March came with that light growl in Drive, but it hasn't got any worse (or better). Makes me wonder how on earth it is still going, as metal debris is generally not too kind to parts (at least that is my experience). I drained and filled the fluid three times after I got the car home, but there really was hardly any debris in the fluid.

I have always been curious about rebuilding a CVT to have on hand for later. I wonder if there are any cores out there that nobody wants any more that I could practice on? I have never rebuilt an automatic or CVT before, but I have rebuilt numerous engines, so I am confident I could learn.

Ok got GASMIZR's transmission out today. Yup same bearing bad just not as bad as the others shown in this thread but can hear a rumble when rotating belt pulleys. Couldnt get belt and pulleys apart yet due to my son raiding tool box and taking my adapter for impact to get nut off driven pulley. I am contemplating replacing all the bearings on belt pulleys just for CYA. Now to get bearings and have some bushings fabricated, got a co worker whom is a machinist and has lathe at home that owes me a favor so time to call it in.
Actualy CVT isnt that bad to dissassemble as automatic transmissions goes fairly simple mechanism. But will say due to old man syndrom my arms look like I was in a fight with wildcat and lost

ECFool, you don't need to undo any of those 46mm nuts. I was able to get to the driven pulley bearing just by undoing circlips and pulling the forward and reverse clutch packs and pistons.

were you able to get the bearing out without pulling the belt off? I pulled the clutches out and took out the 4 bolts holding bearing retainer in but pulley wont come out of case completely
