That seems rather high doesn't it? My concern would be the heat that is being trapped in the transmission lubricant.

Default Transmission removal procedure for insight

Has anyone posted a transmission removal how to with photos for an insight bearing replacement? I have this load growl and am thinking it is this bearing we all have problems with. Money is always the issue. I think I can remove this myself if I take my time and follow the instructions. Also what specs do I need to give machine shop for sleeve for bearings (what metal and dimensions?)

The removal really is straight forward. There is one transmission bolt under the exhaust manifold that is tricky to get to. Also, contrary to what the manual says I personally found it easier to undo the two strut-to-knuckle bolts rather than the lower ball joint bolt on each front axle.

Either EcFool or myself will be posting a how-to for transmission disassembly soon. Transmission removal is covered in the service manual available in the 1g Manual thread.

When I initially talked to my local machine shop, they wanted to measure old and new bearings as well as the journal the bearing goes on, rather than be handed a list of measurements. They will probably just be using steel to make the sleeve and will figure the interferences and clearances themselves. I will be taking my bearings back to the machine shop possibly this week and will have more info then. The sleeve should be around 40mm ID, 45mm OD and 16mm wide, not factoring in interferences.

Default Transmission removal

That would be awesome if you would post the how to. Be sure to send me a message when you do. So after you got the trans out you took it and the bearing to the machine shop so they could make it fit properly. Thanks keep me up to date on your progress.

I have not completed my rebuild yet. My tranny is still in pieces on my workbench.

I visited the machine shop three weeks ago with only the old bearing in hand. They assured me it would be much easier to wait until I had the new bearing in hand. Once holiday season slows down, I will take my new bearing and old bearing back to the machine shop as they suggested.

Default transmission help

Ah, good point I guess they can make the new spacer sleeve out of the ID of the old bearing if it is not in to bad of shape. Please keep me up to date as I will be attempting this also. Thanks again and I love this site I have found a vast amount of needed information.

Default With confidence from this forum!

Hi y'all.
After reading this thread I pulled out my growling CVT and disassembled it. None of my bearings have the cages destroyed so no bits-o-metal in the pan. I did measure the main shafts bearings and found a direct replacement for only one...the roller bearing available from Honda (73/44/17) for $60. the others have to to be sleeved to fit the shafts. I think I'll just replace 3 of the 4 because there is nothing physically wrong with the 16007 bearing and has no noise.
Seems ridiculous for the correct size bearings not to be available anywhere. I only have one bearing making noise (75/40/16) or rather 75/45/16 for the replacement, but there is very black fluid in and around these bearings as well as in the valve bodies and such so a thorough inspection and cleaning is in order. Probably replace the pump at 150k miles to be safe.
I found this bearing (75/45/16) for $5 for steel and $94 for ceramic hybrid and $235 for full ceramic.

I'll be making the sleeves while waiting for the parts to arrive.
