Default Could this 12 v starter realy be bad?

Since my decision to go ICE until I can save up for a new IMA batt, I have been having trouble with my 12 volt starter. It will engage for a second, then grind/engage back and forth until I let off the key. It will start the motor usualy, but its chewin up my flywheel!

I have done the following checks/tests;

-Taken the starter off and dissambled, checked the bendix to ensure it is moving free. I couldnt get the back plate off to actualy see inside and clean the bendix though. Noticed there was a bit of rust/dirt inside bendix area, but bendix seemed to turn out fairly easily. Did notice when turning the splined shaft in the Gear Cover Assembly Case that there seemed to be a bit of resistance at certian spots, like when you turn an electric motor over. Normal? Did bench test it also, seemed to work fine.

- Cleaned and checked all the 4 ground areas, they all were sanded, and tested for contunuity. All good.

- Used a new battery from my truck, used jumper cables to bypass ignition system (key) and sent power dirrectly to starter. Still the same results as when using the origional 12v. battery through the ignition (key).

-Tested the starter pinion by hooking 12 v to the "S" terminal and it clicks on when power applied and off when taken away like the manual says.

Now I dont have an Ammeter or a Tachometer like the manual calls for, so I cant do a load test. Besides, I want to keep gringing my flywheel to a bare minimum if possible.

I did unhook the the BCM already, so I dont think its possible that the IMA starter will ever work, right?
Any ideas guys?

It's entirely possible, though you'd think with the lack of use, they would last forever.. but sometimes not being used is worse than being used.

I say replace it.

Just a folllow up with a weak attempt to help somebody else out with this issue. I ended up buying a new starter and sure enough, the starter was the culprit for the sporatic performance. If I had the time, I should have took the nut off the plastic insulation part where the hot cable bolted to and checked out that area, but I didnt have a socket with thin enough walls to get that nut off. Hope this can help somebody else in the future.
