How does it run?
Drive?
Any high coolant temps?
Ticking noise can be loose valves.
Smell like burnt oil?
Why did you take it to the mechanic?

PLEASE dont trust just 1 mechanic to tell you that..Just a smell, and some ticking is not by any means the right way to check if its bad-my bet, he's banking on you thinking that.

If we go by your mechanic's criteria that you listed, we may ALL need new motors.

But seriously, we can assist better if you answer Willie's questions above or go get a second opinion/evaluation which also includes compression checks in all three cylinders.

If you do need a new motor, there are some which pop up on EBay occasionally or check at car-parts.com

i took it to my family mechanic, he is my uncle, so he would never steer me wrong, so i took it too him, but he is old fashion and doesn't know much about hybrids, so because i just bought the car and the brakes needed to be replaced i took it to him

it runs and drives good in my opinion but you can feel it shift but in what car can't you.

i haven't seen the temps and i am not so sure where i can see that? but the check engine light shows p1167 malfunction with the oxygen heater system would that do anything?

yes i personally didn't smell it but he said it smelled like burnt oil and that it burns through oil, and he says there is a ticking noise, so when i go get the car he will show me all this.

i personally love the car and this site i was so excited to get the car, i got a super deal on it so hopefully i don't need to replace the motor

where can i get a compression check in all three cylinders? can i do that myself?

Thank you guys for all your help and expertise i appreciate it!

you can get a compression gauge from autozone ect. My very first recommendation would be to get the factory service manual (i also think its on here, but owning your own is best imo). I'm not sure what you uncle did/saw to prove its burning oil, i can only speculate. If it was overfilled it sure can burn through it-ive seen that before. The heater code for the o2 isnt a biggie. If you have a semi decent scanner you can verify if the circuit is working or not-needing a new o2. Also, a small, tip. The plugs like to back themselves out some. Don't be tempted to over torque them to get them to stay-they wont, and all you'll do in the end is stretch the threads ruining the cyl head.
I'm not dissing your uncle-he may be a great old school mechanic. This car however can be picky, and at times old school just doesn't work. HTH

I suggest you meet with a fellow Insighter in the area, and get his impressions.

I'm old school, and they work if you know what you are doing.

Seriously...if your uncle doesn't have compression gauge, take the car to another mechanic.

A "ticking" noise usually can indicate upper valve train damage in "normal" cars, but an Insight is inherently loud. Most Insights tick especially at startup.

A "knocking" noise may indicate "bottom end" problem, or damage to main bearings or crank shaft wear.

How many miles on your car/motor anyway???? These engines routinely last well over 200K miles.
