Default Headlight exploded in 10' Insight

Hi,

Sorry if I break any rules as I'm new to this forum.

I hate the low beam lights on my 10' Insight, which I see has been voiced before. Between my night blindness and the fact it's very low and dim, I decided to replace them with H11 Ultrabright lights by Slyvania. That was Saturday.

I realized last night driver's side is out, so checked it today. I am guessing light exploded as wire was hanging with broken bulb and the metal ring it's hooked in melted.

Anyone have problems like this? Any possible suggestions or causes? I'm so frustrated as I was just trying to fix the lighting problem and now it's a big mess and I have no idea why light blew up - did not touch the halogen bulb.

Thanks,
Laura

Welcome aboard, sorry to hear it was under those circumstances. Bulbs explode if there is any type of liquid on the bulb and it gets hot. Anything can do this like grease, oil, water, etc. I use alcohol and a paper towel to wipe them down before installing them, even new bulbs. Since you just purchased them and one still works Id take it back for a refund. If its an auto store they may install the bulb for you. Most of us have adjusted the lamps or switched to a 35 watt hid conversion.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I am more concerned about the melted metal ring as I don't think a new bulb will stay with broken ring.

I did see the thread about adjusting the bulb. The car is just unsafe as the lights are too dim. I hit a deer in September and think a lot of it had to do with fact I couldn't see the deer about 30 ft ahead.

Otherwise, love the car and love that it's better for the environment than a regular ol' car.

Melted metal ring? Can you post a photo? Sounds like the base to the lamp bulb if it has 3 tabs on it. You can get lamps from ebay, the junkyard as well as the dealer. If its a new car, maybe they can replace it underwarranty?

Deers are hard to see unless they are looking in your general direction anyways. Even then you got to look for the eyes as they act like a reflector. If you drive around a lot of ders you need hid lamps as they light em up 2-3 miles away, not alone 30 ft.

Broken bulb is still in the socket thing, just hanging out. The bulb is supposed to go in the metal ring thing, which melted after explosion. I only figured that out since I saw the solidified drippy metal on another car piece - looks sort of like bird turd...lol. So what used to be a solid ring is now an arc. This is I guess the opening to where the light actually locks into.

I think if I put in HID lights, it ruins the special warranty I have. My warranty for buying car new expired already as I drove over 36,000 miles even though had car less than 3 years. Such is the life of a commuter.

I'm going to contact Honda to see as really this should have never happened and only reason I was replacing lights was because I was tired of not seeing well when I drive at night. Depending on that call, I might resort to a plan b.
