In 4 1/2 years I have heard my starter come on exactly once. It does not get used, and almost never goes bad. Grounding straps will rip with a commonly failed motor mount and corrode like crazy because they are copper on aluminum attachment points. But even when intact, the strands can be powdery green inside and under the insulation.
I've NEVER seen or heard of an ignition switch going bad on the G1.
When you hear hoofbeats, don't look for zebras. The more likely, cheaper, and easier to fix culprits are the 12V battery and the grounds.

I'm going back tomorrow to try and start it with the jump box. If it doesn't work I'll post back.

Oh, I like that one

May I add a couple of things. If you succeed in getting it started with a jump, that pretty much tells you that you need a good/new 12v battery. But there are other things to think about.

You can probably get a quick indication that the IMA battery has been bypassed by just taking off the two bolts that cover up the IMA battery master switch - right on top of the big box in the rear, under carpet. But you need to verify this with the link samwiche pointed you to. If the IMA is not bypassed then driving will just run the 12v down again!

And, by all means take off the air cleaner box and look at all the ground wires down there.

There is a meet of the Mid-Atlantic Insight Owners Group on May 18, at Gambrill State Park near Frederick, MD. Put it on your calendar. There are always lots of technical folks you can share with. Drop me a PM with your e-mail and I will add you to the notification list. Check the Mid-Atlantic thread in the "socials and events" section near the bottom of the forum page. Hope to see you there.

I'm at atikovi@email.com. Not sure if I'll still have this one then or the 2002 CVT I bought a month ago with 110K from the same place.

Got it started by rolling down a hill and popping the clutch at about 5-7mph. Made some scary sounding noises but started right up. Ran for a few minutes but then quit. Guess not enough juice in the 12V to sustain ignition. So I connected my jump box to the battery and did it again. Now it kept running fine. Drove it around for 10 minutes and it runs great. The battery light on the dash went off so I assume it's charging. Shut it off and tried to start with the key but just making some scraping sounds. Have to wait a few weeks before I bring it home and can work on it better.

Sounds like you had better start with a new 12V battery.
That would be my choice.

Ok. Keep us posted and close the loop on what happens. Others may learn from it.

I brought it home today. Started it by attaching a jump box to the battery and rolling down a hill. Popped the clutch at 5 mph and it started right up. Soon after the battery light went off so I know the 12V is getting juice. Drove it 30 miles home and did 70mph on the highway no problem. I assume the IMA battery is disconnected because there is nothing in the charge/assist gauge and no bars in the battery gauge.

Feels a little odd without the assist, and you have to upshift a bit later than normal, like at 65mph in 5th or 50mph into 4th, but nothing you can't get used to. I'll check if the battery switch in the back is off. The life time MPG is at almost 55MPG. Is that good for 180,000 mile car?

The check engine and IMA lights are on but there is only one code, P1576 motor drive module voltage signal circuit low input. What does that mean? And why isn't the P1447 battery code on?

I'm charging the 12V battery now and checking around for a negative cable. The end at the firewall is pretty green.

If the end on the firewall is green, replace that cable.
