Default i2 oil changed at 300 miles to mobil 1

guys

i might have a problem.

i bought an insight sunday, 7 days ago. i absolutely love the car. but i might have done something stupid.

im a believer of synth oils. i had a 1992 civic LX that i drove for 367k miles until the head gasket went bad and sold the thing for $650 in 2007. i loved that car and it has seen all 50 states.

back to the I2...

last friday, i did what i did with the civic. i changed the oil to mobil 1 at 300 miles. on the civic, i think i changed it at 100 miles.

my problem is, i have read somewhere and also in the owners manual not to change the factory fill until the first scheduled oil change at 10k miles because the factory fill contains alot of additives for the break-in process.

what are your opinion on this? em i screwed now with my break-in process? how do i put those additives back for the first 10k. i wished i would have saved the factory fill oil

This has been discussed on the oil forum bobistheoilguy.com before. Honda seems to want people to keep it in for the full interval and some people on that forum thought there might be metal castings or high initial break-in wear metals that might cause additional wear. In the end, you lose some anti-wear stuff in the oil called moly, its inside the assembly pre-lube that is put between the friction surfaces when the engine is assembled so that way the engine isn't dry the first time its fired up. Since you've got 300 miles on it, the moly has already done its job in the parts assembly pre-lube. At 300 miles your rings should have already seated as well, usually that gets done within the first 50 miles if not the first time its driven. I have a feeling that the factory probably does this with their initial run-in or through the QA process.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Honda encourages people to leave it in because there isn't really a big reason to drain it any sooner. I doubt that changing the oil at this point will have any impact over of the engine life of your new Honda. There is no way to get what was in the crankcase back in there but you really don't need what was there IMO.

In short - Have fun with your new Insight!!

Ive notice twice now, when the oil and filter is changed, its easier to get bettter fuel economy. Before my second oil change I had 7 thousand miles and at 50 percent on the oil life. I was lucky to get 47 mpg. After the change to honda oil and filter I could easily hit 54.

Before the first oil change I briefly hit 70mpg going 35 down back roads. THen it went away. After the first I was able to do it again.
