Default Does overfilling damage charcoal canister?

Had gone 450 miles and MID was reading 53, so I was expecting about 50 MPG. I was watching the pump expecting it to stop at around 9 gallons, but it kept going, at 9.6 I turned to see gas sloshing out the top of the filler. The auto shutoff had failed, I have never seen that happen before. Probably about a half gallon had spilled over. I alerted the station manager of the problem so they would close the pump and spread some absorbant on the gas. I was close to home so only put about 4 miles on it afterward. The question is I have heard that overfilling can damage the charcoal canister that returns the vapors to the engine. Is this a problem caused by repeated overfilling or can a single event ruin it ? How will I know if there is a problem ? Should I just have it replaced ?
