I doubt it's a recall issue. I think you guys are having way too much anxiety over this. Is your car still operating properly? Is it still get great gas mileage? If it's not interfering with the car's operation then fagetaboutit.
Ive heard a similar noise around the prius cars. I just pretend its a turbo charger.
I've ridden in all 3 generations of Prius now and I can tell you they all make allot more wanky sounds than our Insight. I'd suggest those who have issues with the Insight's various electrical sounds try a ride in Toyota's mess and hear what little they rally have to whine about...

Totally agree, this sound happens on and off and really doesn't bother me at all. I just wanted to know if the sound is ok, which it probably is just the electronics in this thing...
I have to modify what I said before about the high pitched sound that everyone is hearing. Today, for the first time, I heard it nearly throughout, but off and on, a 45 minute commute on city streets, stop and go, traveling no faster than 45 mph. It would come on when I was up to speed then go off, and of course it stayed on once I hit the brakes for long, slow glides to the traffic signal.
But once I got onto the freeway and hit speeds above 50, I didn't hear it anymore. That is, until I got off the freeway and was doing slow braking to the stop light. Very strange.
I hate to make this my first post, but I want to say that the posts here at insightcentral influenced my decision to purchase my '10 insight. (the paid membership is not working btw)
Unforunately my new I2 is exhibiting this behavior. Has anyone had any dealer experiences with this issue and come to some sort of resolution?
In my case I would describe it as computer fan meets chalkboard, and I have turn up the stereo to hide it (This is more then just a "unique" hybrid sound... sounds almost like a dog whistle at a distance)
I can replicate these symptoms basically daily starting 1 week from purchase during the first 2 or 3 miles of my commute (mostly AMs) the behavior during
1. coasting
2. When taking my foot off the gas after accel
3. While autostopped.
4. Climate control OFF (just to eliminate a potential cause)
They are replacing the belt tensior on the car to fix. When I explained to the first mechanic that the behavior is exhibited when at autostop (aka no belt/ accesorry turning) he told me its not good practice to turn the car off at stop lights.
- The second mechanic swears the belt keeps turning with the car off (I got the impression he was just indulging my notion that gas motor is actually turning off... more like I just don't hear it.) So I am obviously concerned my car will be back at the dealer tomorrow.
I've heard a similar sound a few times under certain conditions, such as lifting off the accelerator and regen kicks in, but not during auto-stop. There's been a couple threads about it, and it seems to bother some people more than others. I'm not sure if that means we are all experiencing unique phenomena, or just perceiving it differently

Oh wow...I know this car is not selling quite as much as they'd hoped, but the auto-stop feature has been in various Honda cars since the gen 1 Insight (2000-2006). That's kind of scary that a mechanic at a Honda dealership would be unfamiliar with the concept
Doesn't the Gen II have a light specifically dedicated to auto-stop like the Gen I does? I figured the idiot light was useful so that way people who were unfamiliar with this bring by design would be able to avoid the panic of their engine stopping. You'd think a mechanic would reconize the light in a second after a short drive and not be confused. I hope that isn't the only Honda dealer within 90 miles because they might have a good reputation with, say, an Accord or something but it seems they don't have a clue if they are ignoring key details when you describe the situation.
