Default Question on Oil Change (Drain Plug)

Hello everyone,

Today I tried to get underneath my Insight II to perform the first oil change. I got everything ready(removed the panel) except the drain plug. it's not a regular hexagon type of bolt. it's some kind of square-type bolt. I went to Checker but still couldn't find the right tool

so just wondering if anyone has seen it before? what kind of wrench should I use?

Thanks in advance,

I changed my oil last December and I don't recall the oil drain plug being an unusual size/shape. Are you sure you aren't looking at the drain plug for the CVT fluid?

I should have taken a picture for that. I followed the manual to remove the panel

I was hoping to see bolt like the following,

Instead, the drain plug has a square hole, which is more likely to be driven by a socket wrench,

I tried a couple of socket wrench, but they won't fit.

Thanks for the help,

I use a regular socket on my wrench, I believe it's either 8 or 10 mm? I changed my I2 awhile ago and the CVT fluid uses a square head, 3/8" if I recall. The oil drain plug is a regular socket, look at a Honda parts website to get the exact size. Have a breaker bar or extension, as well as an oil filter removal tool (I got one at WM for ~$5 if I recall) ready as they can be a pain to get off the first time.

Are you sure it isn't a 14mm hexagonal head?

That's probably right. I just leave it out in the top of the tool box since it's about the only size I use on a regular basis. I don't really pay attention to what size it actually is anymore.

The transmission drain plug is on the drivers side under hte little piece with 4 screws in it. Its a 3/8 rachett head. You should change that every 15 thousand.

The engine is on the passenger side and faces rearward and is either 14 or 17mm, I cant remember which. To get to it you need to undo like 4-6 of those plastic push pins and remove about 8 screws and lower the center most of the belly pan.
