I picked up a really cheap USB ebay one (clone) for less than $50, and got PCMScan 2.x, however, PCMScan has the offical OBD-II as well for about $120 but you get a discount on the bundled software and used it with a cheap netbook (Asus EeePC, 7 inch screen). There will be more software support support with OBD-II devices from 3rd parties and not the clone.
If you're a linux buff you can get free linux ones that allow you to map to GPS data and do much more useful geo-tagging and readout, but be warned if you like to process that much data on a 4 hour drive you can log as much as 16 megs if you turn everything on, and it's a pain to process even in a spreadsheet! Moving it around you can see where you can improve your driving as well or the best "hypermiling" routes to drive.
As always don't use the netbook while you're driving, you can log data on both software for later processing!
