Default Tighten Gas Cap Warning came on today(error code 455)

It's very rainy here and I drove through a few(not too deep) puddles on the way to work today. 2 Hours later when I got in my Insight, the Tighten Gas Cap Warning Indicator came on. I got out and checked my gas cap and it was secure. I removed it, reinstalled it, turned off the car and it was still there. Then I hooked up my pocket OBD 2 scanner and got an error code 455. I cleared the code and now the indicator is off.

P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)

My insight has just over 3K miles.

What do you think?

I would keep an eye on it, and see if it comes back on again. Thats an odd code to get, especially when the car only has 3k worth of mile on it.

This happened with my moms Mazda when she got it, turned out that there was a plastic imperfection that left a tiny hole that triggered her check engine light and was replaced under warranty. I wouldn't rule out a defective gas cap that isn't sealing properly.

It could be a defective gas cap. However the fact that it happened after driving through a few puddles; is an awful big coincidence. Water and or dampness must have been a factor.

What's messed up is that this is the second issue with my car; in the first 3k miles. Last week I had the drivers side rotor resurfaced (under warranty) for a score that developed. I f I didn't keep an OBD scanner around, I'd be bringing it to the dealer;again.

Interesting. What time of year did you buy your car? Do you remember what the weather was like?

Same here, seems quite a few people got the message for no reason and it went away.

It was the beginning of October in New York... typical 50-60 degree weather... dont remember it being all that rainy.

Default Click-Click-Click

How you tighten the cap is important too. I make a point of hearing Click-Click-Click to make sure it is properly sealed. (The OM says one click is fine)
