As some of you know, one of the few issues with our beloved Insight is that the display gauge lenses scratch very easily.
If you've never cleaned or dusted yours,
DON'T! Using anything besides canned air will permanently mar the plastic with scratches and swirls that show up under bright sunlight and can make some of the numbers hard to read.
I tried everything to clean and polish mine only to make them worse and they were so horrible looking I was embarrassed for others to see them. I was considering having the dealer replace them, but they would have charged a fortune and it is not something I would have the stomach to do myself.
One day I was browsing through the Honda parts for these 2 pieces over at the
Honda eStore and I was able to locate both part numbers:
Speedometer lens: 78101-TM8-J01 (~$11)
Densometer lens: 78103-TM8-A01 (~$20)
I happen to have a great neighbor who has done a lot of work for me. Over his career he has been certified as an Acura, Toyota and Porsche mechanic and currently works for an exotic foreign imports dealership. I told him about this problem and he said he'd be happy to install these parts for me. He also suggested that since these lenses scratch so easily, it would be a good idea to have them coated with something to prevent scratching on the new pieces.
When the parts I ordered came in, he took them to his dealership and had the ClearBra subcontractor look at them. He said that the ClearBra guy had custom-made protectors for cell phones, iPods, and other equipment for friends. Anyway, the ClearBra guy wanted to try it on these parts at no charge. He did a perfect job making the covers.
Today my neighbor installed them and they look better than new. What's even nicer about them, I can wipe them with a soft cloth and no scratches!
I just wanted to share the outcome with everyone here.
By the way, to remove the plastic cowl on the dash behind the steering wheel, he had to remove the navigation panel cover surrounding the NAV unit. There is 1 screw that holds on the cowl at the right side. Everything else he snapped apart in seconds using a small plastic tool.
So if anyone else is in this situation wanting to replace these lenses, it can be done. I don't think I would trust a dealer doing it because they could break more than they fix. And I would
highly recommend the ClearBra coating or similar to protect the new ones.
