Default Roll back

A while back I read somewhere on these forums that when you lift your foot off the brake pedal, there is some mechanism that remains engaged to prevent the car from rolling backwards on a hill. Whatever this is, I've definitely felt it's effects before.

There are not many hills to speak of here in N. Texas, but today while driving to work, I noticed my car roll back a little a couple times while coming out of a stop on a slight incline. Does this happen for anyone else?

Should I be worried? What could be wrong? The car has 6K miles on it and just recently had the first service done at the dealership about a month ago.

The dealership where I get service is really close, but they are always insanely busy, so I figured I'd get your opinions here first...

I find to engage the anti hill roll mode you need to give the brake pedal an additional hard pump - AFTER - you have come to your complete stop.

I just pull the hand brake, instead, while moving my foot over from one pedal to another. This technique works for a larger variety of passenger cars.

I did not know that the car had that feature built in.

Thanks for the replies. I know this is normal, or at least was for me in my previous automatic transmission vehicles. However, I know that I've felt the car "hold" on an incline before after taking my foot off the brake. I'll try your suggestion jonniedee.

I know I could use the handbrake for longer situations, but I'm just talking about a short/quick transition like a stop sign at the top of an incline.

BTW, found the post by JoeCVT that I was referring to. Here's the original question, and then his reply:

Quote:
I have noticed that after a complete stop when I release the brake it holds it for a sec or two then moves forward. If I give it gas before that happens it feels like a manual car with letting the clutch out too quickly. Is that normal? I assume so but it is weird.
Quote:
Normal...They are called brake hold solenoid valves that hold the rear brakes for about one second after you release the brake pedal. This design is intended to hold your car still while on an incline at stop so your car does not roll backwards before the CVT forward clutch engages.

So if this is normal, I'm just wondering what could have changed for it to stop working now :-/

What I described in my earlier posting applies to gen 1 Insights and I assume that it would work the same way in gen 2 Insights....The only thing that I forgot to mention is that these brake holding valves will only start to hold the car if you are completely stopped at 0 MPH for at least a second.....If you are doing a quick stop then go, they will not actuate.

Next time you are on an incline, make sure you are at a complete stop then see if it makes any difference. Also, make sure that you are in normal drive mode...

Also, this only works when you go into AutoStop and when you release the brake pedal for engine restart, some pressure is still applied to the rear brakes so you don't roll back....

Thanks for the information. I'll make sure it's working under those conditions - complete stop for at least a couple seconds and auto-stop engaged - before taking it to the dealership to get looked at.

I've never felt the hill holder. Every car I've driven has always rolled back on a hill when I go from the brakes to the gas. That's why I always leave a lot of room between the car in front of me and my car, and get pissed when the person behind me does not!
