Default Tighten Gas Cap

I keep getting a tighten gas cap warning on the MID. My gas gap is tight. I have unscrewed it and screwed it back on 3 times now. The warning went away for a few days then it came back on. I repeated the process of unscrewing and screwing again and the warning went away but it has come on again. Any ideas? What gives?

i didn't experience the warning light problem but i was nonetheless concerned with the lack of a lock on the gas door/cap ... i picked up the stant 10507 locking gas cap - it's been working as a gas cap should

It could be a pinhole or cracked seam in the cap. I would check the seal first. First make sure the sealing surface of the filler neck is clean and smooth. Then, I would clean the rubber seal in the cap and apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly onto the seal.

Firsthonda,

Thanks for the link to the other thread.

I noticed that others said it could have been moisture. That might have been the problem. It has been raining her day after day after day. I would say in the last two weeks there has only been one day without rain. It is unbelievable the amount of rain we have received in the Pittsburgh area.

The message about tightening my fuel cap has gone away now.

Yesterday as I was leaving work I received the "Check/Tighten Gas Cap" Info msg for the first time. Since I have less than a 7 mile commute one-way, I waited til I got home to tightened it additionally (it was already on tight and had about 120 miles on it since my last fill-up). This morning when I started up the car I was greeted with the "Check Emission Control System" Info msg. Only have a little over 1,600 miles on it. Last 2 days have been quite humid and there have been large temp swings during the past 2 weeks with the HI temps varying from low 80's to low 50's.

Think this will go away by itself at the next fill-up?
