Default Weird whitish mystery powder around engine block cabling...

Have had my car for 2mths/1500miles... when I noticed today there's this whitish powdery substance around my engine block. It's confined to one area below the right-side black engine cover (with the IMA lettering on it).

The powder's super-fine (you can see the smudges from my fingerprints on the left-side black cable), has no smell and doesn't seem to be leaking from anywhere I can spot.

So unless my car's been used as a mule to sneak crack outta Japan, I'm not sure what this is, exactly. Any clues?

Did you ...or the train that brought your car to the dealership ever pass by a dirt road, factory, mine, etc where fine particulates would make there way under the hood?

Makes me wish I would have taken a picture after driving through the desert. You more or less need to replace your air filter when coming back, fine dust just like this but much more of it.

Wipe it off and see if it returns?

I looked at my car and didn't see this. I'm wondering if it could be some sort of spray anti-corrosive. I'm a female of the species, and not up on all the technical terms... the vertical metal housing that has a blue 'button' looking thing on it seems to be where the majority of this stuff is located. Is it possible that it is overspray from whatever the factory was trying to protect on that item? It seems that block / whatever is covered, almost, 100% with the powder.

"wiping it off and see if it returns" - by golly, I never thought about that! *smacks forehead and groans*. Thanks dude. Should've tried that one earlier

Looks like maybe "fire extinguisher" residue, possibly from an electrial fire?

Looks like developer sprayed on a fuel or water line to make sure there are no leaks.

I go with the theory you car is snorting cocaine. At first I thought it looked like frost like you would see on an a/c evaporator but I think your Insight needs to enter rehab. I can help if you want to stage an intervention.

The blue stud/bolt thing is a connector for the AC. I bet the car had an ac leak or complaints of poor ac and it either leaked or they were looking for a leak.

Id wipe it off and too see if it returns.

My engine bay was covered in tire shine when I got my car and til the pollen fall out every Spring that makes the cars turn green, my engine bay was still clean.

Now if the powder has a yellowish color to it, thats from a fire extinguisher.
